How do we feel about Orson?

My newest favorite boy’s name is [name_m]Orson[/name_m]. I love that it means “bear cub,” but I’m not totally sure I could actually see myself using it for a tiny baby… It kind of feels like an old man name, but that isn’t a deal breaker for me usually. What do you think? Also, middle name suggestions? I had tentatively stuck it with [name_m]Wesley[/name_m] on my list, is that too similar to [name_m]Orson[/name_m] [name_m]Wells[/name_m]? Also, are there any nickname possibilities here? It isn’t super important to me, but most of my other names have nicknames associated with them… Does it clash with the other names on my list (see signature)?

I like it quite a bit. I do think [name_m]Orson[/name_m] [name_m]Wesley[/name_m] is too similar to [name_m]Orson[/name_m] [name_m]Wells[/name_m] though.

[name_u]Ori[/name_u] would be a cute nickname.

It fits with your other “old man” names, like [name_m]Roland[/name_m] and [name_m]Walter[/name_m].

I think [name_m]Orson[/name_m] is a bit too “bear”, maybe it’s because I speak french and ourson means bear, but still. It’s too close for me. I like [name_u]Orion[/name_u] much more. I just can’t picture [name_m]Orson[/name_m] as an actual person. I agree with pp that [name_m]Orson[/name_m] [name_m]Wesley[/name_m], while a nice combo, is too close to [name_m]Orson[/name_m] [name_m]Wells[/name_m].

As for pairs, I think [name_m]Orson[/name_m] & [name_m]Shepherd[/name_m] ([name_u]Ori[/name_u] & [name_m]Shep[/name_m]) would be a cool brother sibset. For a sister, I like [name_m]Orson[/name_m] & [name_f]Leonie[/name_f] (neither needs a nickname).

I like [name_m]Orson[/name_m], its certainly not a name you hear often (which is why its hard to picture on a baby). [name_u]Ori[/name_u] is a cute nn or Orsy. [name_m]Orson[/name_m] [name_m]Wesley[/name_m] is a bit close to [name_m]Orson[/name_m] [name_m]Wells[/name_m], I’d probably keep looking for a middle name. [name_m]Orson[/name_m] [name_u]Wallace[/name_u], [name_m]Orson[/name_m] [name_m]Walter[/name_m], [name_m]Orson[/name_m] [name_m]Victor[/name_m]?

I think it fits in nicely with your list too!

I like Orson Wesley, in my opinion it sounds very regal, and if he grows up not liking Orson he has the option to go by Wesley or Wes. Also when he grows up, not a lot of people his age are going to remember Orson Welles, and what are people going to say? “Wow that’s, like Orson Welles, but not Orson Welles”? No because that would make them look like an idiot

I love the meaning of [name_m]Orson[/name_m] - super cute! But I don’t really feel it as a name. I just keep thinking of [name_u]Orion[/name_u] instead.

I do agree that [name_m]Orson[/name_m] [name_m]Wesley[/name_m] is very close to [name_m]Orson[/name_m] [name_m]Wells[/name_m].

I really like it too, and honestly there are worse people your name could sound like, right? It is a little more similar than I would like, which is why I asked… It’s only going to be an issue if I can get my husband on board with [name_m]Orson[/name_m] in the first place though, so I’m not too worried about it yet :).

Thanks everyone for the nickname suggestions! I had actually thought of [name_u]Ori[/name_u] already but I wasn’t sure if that was too much of a stretch… The nickname isn’t a totally necessity, but I like to think of all the possibilities, because even if I don’t give my kids nicknames I’m sure family members will.

As for the [name_m]Orson[/name_m] [name_m]Wells[/name_m] connection, I’m not super attached to any of my boy’s first name middle name combos, so maybe I will look into rearranging things if I ever do decide to use it… I mostly just put them together because they were my two newest favorites, and I do think they sound nice together…

I don’t know if anyone said this, but you could always use the nn [name_m]Bear[/name_m]. I agree with a previous poster about [name_f]Leonie[/name_f] and [name_m]Shepherd[/name_m] in a sibset; I like the subtle animal theme.

[name_m]Orson[/name_m] [name_m]Anthony[/name_m]
[name_m]Orson[/name_m] [name_m]Arthur[/name_m] (too much bear?)
[name_m]Orson[/name_m] [name_m]Charles[/name_m]
[name_m]Orson[/name_m] [name_m]Conrad[/name_m]
[name_m]Orson[/name_m] [name_m]Frederick[/name_m]
[name_m]Orson[/name_m] [name_m]Pierce[/name_m]
[name_m]Orson[/name_m] [name_m]Raphael[/name_m]
[name_m]Orson[/name_m] [name_m]Hughes[/name_m]
[name_m]Orson[/name_m] [name_m]Conway[/name_m]
[name_m]Orson[/name_m] [name_m]Montgomery[/name_m]

[name_m]Orson[/name_m] isn’t really one of my favorites. If you do choose to use it though I would choose a different middle to avoid the [name_m]Orson[/name_m] Welles situation.

@ottertails
I hadn’t even thought of the animal connection there! And [name_m]Bear[/name_m] would be cute!!

I like [name_m]Orson[/name_m]! It’s uncommon yet simple. And I love the idea of using [name_m]Bear[/name_m] as a nickname. I agree with whoever said it really doesn’t matter if [name_m]Orson[/name_m] [name_m]Wesley[/name_m] sounds like [name_m]Orson[/name_m] [name_m]Wells[/name_m]… it’s not like that’s an embarrassing person to have a similar name to!
