How do you deal with your naming desire?

We all love names, that’s why we’re here, isn’t it?
So most of us have a list of names ready in case of need.
This list contains many names, sometimes hundreds of them.
Chances are we won’t have 50 kids to name, so what to do with the ones that aren’t put to use on kids?
Try to convince your friends to name their children thus?
Name your plants?

[name]Share[/name] with me your outlets for your namegiving desire.

Me, I play the Sims 2 where there’s as many babies to name as I could wish for

[name]Hi[/name]!

Seeing as I have no kids and my (constantly changing!) list consists of about five names, I have pretty much no experience, but maybe you could:

  • Use the names on your pets?
  • “Help” name your kids’ toys?
  • Endorse the names here as much as possible?
  • Name inanimate objects?
  • Give your kids twenty middle names? (Well, obviously not twenty!)
  • Write a story and use the names on characters?

That’s all I can come up with, at the moment!

I have a select list of my favourites (well, not that select, as all of my children will have two middles, and there are about ten full names on the list, but pretty select). I must admit I do like the idea of enthusiastically endorsing the names which don’t quite make it among expecting friends, or among my own children when I have grandchildren on the way

I also adore cats, and when I live somewhere which allows them, they shall be fabulously named!

Daydream about adopting!

I’ve already had my 2 children, and boy, do I wish Nameberry existed when I was pregnant with them! So now, I post on NB to satisfy my naming interests. Plus, there are a lot of nice ladies on this site with lots of great naming suggestions!

There’s also a site that I go to, where you can adopt a virtual pet.
Naming them is good fun too :3

I write and create characters with my beloved names.

You could voulenteer at an animal shelter. They always need names for litters of kittens and puppies as well as stray dogs. Sometimes the names that they come up with are pretty lame!

When I was in college I dated a guy who’s family raised goats. [name]Every[/name] year they had a name theme for all the baby goats. I helped name a few, it was fun! But I don’t recommend getting a few hundred goats just to name them.

I buy fish. Each and every one has a name, and I can have a lot of them in a 36 gallon tank. Other pets too… And I do indeed help name dolls and toys that belong to the children around me. Although it can be a losing battle, as the conversation often goes like this: Me: “Ooh, she looks like a [name]Sofia[/name]. You should name her that.” 3-year-old: “No, she’s Island [name]Princess[/name] [name]Barbie[/name].”

I also write fiction and use names I love for the characters. And play The Sims 3.

Oh yeah, definitely Sims. That helps. That and naming my car.

I write a lot. The names I love but won’t be able to use for whatever reason are the ones I use in my stories.
That’s the best way I’ve found to deal with my naming desire.

Play on sims

WRITING! Names that I love but can’t use for whatever reason tend to end up on my characters. What stinks is when I fall in love with a name through a character. [name]Otis[/name] is an example. [name]Otis[/name] is the name of my main character, and now I wish I’d chosen a different name for him so that I could use [name]Otis[/name] for a son. :stuck_out_tongue:

I hope one day I’ll be able to adopt because having my own kids might not be a real option. My biggest issue with adopting is that it makes me sad that I might never be able to actually name a child (yep, not the genes, not the “will i be able to love the child”, just the nameproblem). I just hope I can add at least a middle. If I get to use 1 or 2 of the names on my list I’m more than happy. I’ll just force my other names on other people

Posting is the easiest solution. But I also love to name things too. Car is [name]Beatrix[/name], plant is [name]Chloe[/name], dog is [name]Brody[/name], and I love to help m girls name their dolls. We have [name]Adelaide[/name], [name]Sophie[/name] and [name]Charlotte[/name]/[name]Lottie[/name] and [name]Mackenzie[/name].
My kids all have 2 middle names so that also helps out alot. But my favorite (besides my own kids) is helping my sister in law name her children. I named my nephew [name]Declan[/name], and my other sis-in-law is going to use [name]Silas[/name] after she got my permission since thats my sons middle name. Im so excited!

This is a cute thread.

Erm, I name everything. My hairbrushes, my laptops, my phones, my cars, backpacks, etc.! I’ll probably never have pets, so I have to use some names somewhere, haha. I actually only have about 5-7 names I truly adore, and I want a rather large family, so hopefully I’ll get to use half of my favorites for each gender, or so. After that, I’ll probably just name everything in sight. And, as @southern.maple said, characters! Although I don’t have any problem naming future children something I named a character. If you write enough stories, you’ll write yourself out of options for future children!

I create characters, a lot of them. And posting on here, I’m also renaming myself so that satisfies A LOT.

I write prolifically so I get to use so many names…I once challenged someone to choose a name I haven’t used before on a character and they couldn’t do it, lol. Plus I name pets

It helps to be a film major in grad school where one is constantly writing new characters or renaming actual people to help keep them anonymous in documentaries. What’s cool about it is that if someone is writing a period piece they now come to me and ask for advice.
