How do you feel about alliteration?

[name_m]Hi[/name_m]!

I’m currently in love with the name [name_m]Walter[/name_m], and have been toying around with middle names for it. I came across one that I particularly like, but it also starts with a W.

What do you think about alliteration, with either first/last or first/middle combinations?

I love it- but not all three, that would sound ridiculous to me (e.g: [name_f]Sophie[/name_f] [name_f]Serafina[/name_f] [name_u]Sloane[/name_u] would be a no-no). If done correctly, alliteration in names is stunning.

I don’t mind if you get it right, and it sounds okay. I think it’s just visually I don’t like the look of two names with same initial letter next to each other. I mind less with fn/ln, I think because (if there are middles/ a middle) I know there’s actually a break in between. Plus you can’t exactly change the surname easily, and sometimes it actually sounds kind of cool.

You can do as you wish, but alliterative names personally bother me a lot. Juts one of my weird peeves. I knew a [name_u]Seth[/name_u] whose last name was also one letter and started with S. Not pretty. But it’s your chose what you use.

I am a huge fan of alliteration! As long as it doesn’t cause a lispy sound, like [name_u]Seth[/name_u] [name_m]Smith[/name_m] would in the post above. I think alliterations makes a name memorable, but I also think the sound is very charming. I really like [name_m]Walter[/name_m], by the way. [name_m]Walt[/name_m] is such a great nn.

I guess it depends on the two names. Like [name_u]Seth[/name_u] [name_m]Smith[/name_m] isn’t too hot. But my favorite combo for a long time was [name_u]Bryn[/name_u] [name_u]Bellamy[/name_u]. I love the way the short one syllable B name [name_u]Bryn[/name_u] went with the three syllable [name_u]Bellamy[/name_u].

One of my all time favorite girl names is [name_u]Piper[/name_u], and we could never use it because her last name would start with P, and the initials would be PP. So that’s just asking for ridicule. So two Ps together are a no-go, but other letter work great together, like Bs.

Generally, I’m not a fan of alliteration. However, if it’s done carefully (eg. avoiding similar sounds, syllables count, certain letters etc…), the name combo can be memorable. Two W’s in a combo can sound lispy and end up like two R’s (think [name_m]Elmer[/name_m] Fudd :)) so perhaps you could use another mn to break up the initials.

I mostly agree with what pps have said–there’s good alliteration and bad alliteration. In the case of [name_m]Walter[/name_m], I’d be extra careful, both for the reasons mischa stated and because [name_m]Walter[/name_m] W___ is probably going to make people think of Breaking Bad.

I’ve always loved alliteration names. It makes the name so much more memorable!
