I am noticing this more and more out and about in the real world. My hairdresser - DZ - and I met a little boy going by the initials ‘J.R.’ yesterday. So cute!
Does anyone watch ‘Pregnant In Heels’ on [name]Bravo[/name]? [name]Rosie[/name] Pope’s sons are [name]James[/name] [name]Roderick[/name] (J.R.) and [name]Wellington[/name] [name]Reed[/name] ([name]Wells[/name]). I like!
Most of the time I don’t like initials as nicknames. There are a few that aren’t too bad, and I think it can be cute for an “around the house” type thing, but over all I don’t like it.
One of my friends has a little boy and her husband said she could name him whatever she wanted as long as the initials were A.J. because that’s what he wanted to call him. So that was that.
[name]Every[/name] now and again I will see something cute. My friend named her first son [name]Joseph[/name] [name]Edward[/name] after his two grandfathers, and they call him [name]Jed[/name]. I thought that was a neat twist.
I once had a student with the full name of [name]Alan[/name] [name]Jay[/name] ____. He actually went by AJay. Weird.
I’ve known A.J. / B.B. / B.J. / C.D. / C.E. / C.J. / D.J. / F.G. / H.B. / J.B. / J.D. / J.J. / J.R. / K.C. / P.J. / R.J. / T.J. / T.R. And that’s just off the top of my head.
(On a related note, my initials are RCHL and my first name is [name]Rachel[/name]. I think that’s pretty cool.)
To the pp. That is funny about the [name]Joseph[/name] [name]Edward[/name] thing, [name]Julian[/name] [name]Edgar[/name] is one of my favorite combos with the nn [name]Jed[/name]. And I thought I was being so original when I thought of it
I like less common initial nns. J.R. is cute, as is J.T. J. P. and M.J. AJ and CJ feel overdone to me though.
Well, my dad goes by J.P. ([name]James[/name] [name]Patrick[/name]) and my fella goes by R.J. ([name]Robert[/name] [name]John[/name]), so I feel pretty good about it! Since classic boy’s names are so common, it’s a great way to distinguish yourself from all the Jims and Bobs out there.
For girls, using initials can be an easy way to make your name more gender-neutral on a resume, etc. Lots of female authors also use initials, like A.S. ([name]Antonia[/name] [name]Susan[/name], so pretty!) [name]Byatt[/name] and J.K. ([name]Joanne[/name]) Rowling. Rowling’s publishers made her use initials because they thought young boys wouldn’t want to read a book by a female author!
My favorite initial combination is AC-- it’s unexpected, but cool like air conditioning
I [name]LOVE[/name] initials as nns. My husband went by AJ sometimes in college. The strangest I’ve ever heard was EC, but it totally worked. When we were first expecting, my husband liked Ezekial but wanted to call him EZ (easy). Like, have the mn start with a Z. I loved the idea.
The boy name we are going with will give the initials MH and my only reservation is that those aren’t good nn initials. Maybe for my next baby.
I woudn’t personally give my child a nn with initials because I generally do not like nicknames but I don’t hate the idea for other children. My brother is named [name]Dean[/name] [name]Edward[/name] [name]Jr[/name]. after my father, I don’t think I have ever called him [name]Dean[/name] unless I was joking around with him. He’s always been D.J. unless he was in trouble, my mom would yell out his full name!
I live in a French-speaking area where hyphenated names are very common so lot’s of of people went by their first name initials:
MJ ([name]Marie[/name]-[name]Jos[/name]”e)
AM ([name]Anne[/name]-[name]Marie[/name])
JP ([name]Jean[/name]-[name]Pierre[/name] or [name]Jean[/name]-[name]Paul[/name])
JM ([name]Jean[/name]-[name]Michel[/name])
JB ([name]Jean[/name]-[name]Benoit[/name] or [name]Jean[/name]-[name]Bernard[/name])
JF ([name]Jean[/name]-[name]Fran[/name]”ois)
JS ([name]Jean[/name]-S”bastien)
JL ([name]Jean[/name]-[name]Luc[/name])
I also know people named [name]Marie[/name]-Andr”e, [name]Marie[/name]-”ve and Andr”e-[name]Anne[/name] that don’t use their intials as nicknames.
I personally don’t think any of these are usuable in an English-speaking or bilingual environment but I’d be interested to see what you think!
I go by L.C. (my first name is [name]Lauren[/name] and my last name starts with a C). I worked with another [name]Lauren[/name] and they were constantly saying [name]Lauren[/name] M and [name]Lauren[/name] C. It was naturally shortened. I don’t mind it at all.
I think certain ones, AJ, PJ, CJ are really sweet! My nephew is [name_m]Alexander[/name_m] [name_m]Justin[/name_m] and we call him AJ. It’s honestly so cute.
Usually I don’t have any problem with it. However I do think you have to think about what they sound like. For instance I know a cute little toddler boy who goes by L.C. Which in theory isn’t bad but when pronounced aloud sounds exactly the same as [name_f]Elsie[/name_f] (which I won’t lie is kinda cute on a little boy but still a little weird) same would go for other initials like M.E. ([name_f]Emme[/name_f]) etc…
I don’t particularly like initials as nicknames, it’s something I’d want to avoid for my own kids unless their initials spelled something e.g. [name_u]Theo[/name_u] [name_m]Edward[/name_m] [name_m]Denton[/name_m] (example name) nn Ted.
I’m not anti- them in general, I just personally wouldn’t use them.
When my nephew was born, they almost named him after his father, meaning he would have ‘[name_m]Junior[/name_m]’ after his name and would become E.J. His middle name would also begin with J. I thought it’d be sweet to use EJ as a way to differentiate between him and his father.
I like initials as nicknames. One of my favorite combos ever is [name_f]Anna[/name_f] Capitu nn [name_m]Ace[/name_m] from it’s initials A.C. I also like L.C. ([name_f]Elsie[/name_f]) and LA (like the city!).
I love it! I really love KJ but I don’t like any K names My sister is pregnant and if she has a boy she’s thinking about naming him [name_m]Joshua[/name_m] [name_m]John[/name_m] “JJ”
