How do you feel about this name?

I’m never really sure how I feel about this name. It’s a family name and there would be (I think) intense pressure to pick this one if someday in the far off future I was having a boy. It was my parents’ favorite name they never used. It’s a family name. The name is
[name_m]Carl[/name_m]

Sometimes I feel nostalgic and I love it, and sometimes I can’t stand it. [name_m]Carl[/name_m] is never very trendy. It’s out and seems to be out forever. I never see this name in posts about name trends. No one seems to like this name. In movies a lot of Carls seem nerdy and very serious. [name_m]Carl[/name_m] is described “no-nonsense”, which doesn’t sound good (neither does the rest of the Name berry description)

I have never known anyone with this name, although we had this neighbor who was anti-social and not a good association for me. I didn’t know him. The family connections are good.

A lot of the other forms are popular. Like [name_m]Charles[/name_m], [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f], and [name_f]Caroline[/name_f]. I like [name_f]Caroline[/name_f], but [name_m]Charles[/name_m] is an ex of a close friend and [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] is too popular. I’m not too fond of [name_f]Carly[/name_f] or [name_f]Carla[/name_f].
The Latino forms [name_m]Carlos[/name_m] and [name_m]Carlo[/name_m] are fun. I am a huge Psych fan, so I love the name [name_m]Carlton[/name_m], but you have to have the right last name I think with [name_m]Carlton[/name_m]/[name_m]Carleton[/name_m].

I don’t know. It popped in a book I was reading as a joke.

What do you think? [name_f]Do[/name_f] you like [name_m]Carl[/name_m]? [name_f]Do[/name_f] you know a lot of them? Is it too dated? [name_m]Will[/name_m] it be too dated in ten years to seven years to thirteen years when I might have a son?[name_f]Do[/name_f] you prefer more modern boys names such as [name_m]Callum[/name_m] or more traditional names like Carl?

Thank you in advance!

I’ve only ever known one [name_m]Carl[/name_m], he’d be in university now. I didn’t know him that well but he was pretty social and outgoing, not serious or nerdy at all. I think it’s a nice, solid name that doesn’t stand out too much but isn’t common/popular either. I could imagine a [name_m]Carl[/name_m] of any age.

I know just one [name_m]Carl[/name_m]. He’s incredibly tall, red-headed, forgetful, fit, hilarious, adventurous and intelligent. He has a lot of freckles and is really strong. Because of this, [name_m]Carl[/name_m] strikes me as one of the most personable names - it’s funny how experiences of other people colour our opinions!
[name_u]Carlisle[/name_u] is a big family name for me so I’m 99% sure I’ll use it at least in the middle some day.
To sum up: I like [name_m]Carl[/name_m]. [name_u]Carlisle[/name_u] may be an option for you too. Best of luck!

I really want to love [name_m]Carl[/name_m], since [name_m]Carl[/name_m] [name_m]Sagan[/name_m] is a hero of mine, but I just can’t quite do it. I think it’s simply the sound of the name itself–it seems like a one syllable name trying to be two syllables if that makes sense. (I have pregnancy insomnia, so this could be all rambles.) [name_u]Carlisle[/name_u] is a great suggestion. I’ve never known any Carls myself, so it doesn’t seem as dated as other names.

I think it’s a good solid name that is timeless yet fresh as it’s not overly common.

I don’t like the name [name_m]Carl[/name_m] - for me it conjures up an image of a 40 something year old man who drinks too much wears nothing but sandals.

I like [name_m]Carl[/name_m]. I think it suits any age. I only know one. He is about 35 now and extremely intelligent.

I knew a [name_m]Karl[/name_m] in college, so he’s late 20s/early 30s now. He was so gorgeous! He was also really friendly and popular. His name never struck me as odd or dated.
[name_m]Carl[/name_m]/[name_m]Karl[/name_m] is one of those names that doesn’t rock the boat. I don’t know of anyone who loves nor loathes it. It’s just neutral.

I knew a [name_m]Karl[/name_m] in fourth grade. he was nice and quiet, shy.
I prefer [name_f]Carlen[/name_f], [name_m]Carlson[/name_m], or even [name_m]Carlton[/name_m]. I love Carlon/[name_f]Carlen[/name_f].

I like [name_m]Carl[/name_m]. I think I prefer [name_m]Carlo[/name_m] or [name_m]Carlos[/name_m] or even [name_m]Carlton[/name_m], though. For some reason, I have trouble pronouncing [name_m]Carl[/name_m], like it ends too soon? That is totally a personal quirk, though. I think if I was going to name a boy [name_m]Carl[/name_m], I would nickname him [name_m]Carlo[/name_m]. It’s a nice solid name, though. And it won’t be quickly dated, like names like [name_m]Callum[/name_m] will be.

[name_m]Charles[/name_m] and [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] are nice, too, but I do know at least five babies named [name_m]Charles[/name_m] or [name_u]Charlie[/name_u] and I think… seven little girls named [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f]. I have three nephews named [name_m]Charles[/name_m], so it is obviously out for me. But if you don’t have this problem, then [name_m]Charles[/name_m] is a much more popular option right now.

Thanks for the feedback so far. It’s good to see the mostly positive associations. I think it’s funny one of you pictures who only wears sandals. I also like [name_u]Carlisle[/name_u] and Carlon. I think it’s good to see mostly positive associations considering Name [name_u]Berry[/name_u] is really down on this name. Thank you and anyone who hasn’t posted feel free to do so.

Oh let me add the [name_m]Carl[/name_m] I knew was rather smart (became a lawyer) and good looking.
I also think of the character [name_m]Karl[/name_m] off [name_f]Love[/name_f] Actually… swoon worthy right there.

I don’t know any Carls but my dads middle name is [name_m]Karl[/name_m], and it’s a family name, I think. I’m not sure who’s name it was. I think its an okay name- very neutral

[name_m]Carl[/name_m] is really dorky. I’m sure the right guy could pull it off, but I can only imagine it on a middle-aged man who wears socks with his sandals. If you want to honor your [name_m]Carl/name_m, I would go for something like [name_m]Charles[/name_m], [name_m]Carlton[/name_m], [name_u]Carlisle[/name_u], or [name_m]Carlson[/name_m].

I like [name_m]Carl[/name_m]! I would love to see it on a little boy. I think it could totally be revived and work well on a laid back, smart, funny guy. [name_m]Don[/name_m]'t know if anyone mentioned it yet but it makes me think of the popular kids book, Good Dog, [name_m]Carl[/name_m] by [name_f]Alexandra[/name_f] [name_u]Day[/name_u]. Kiddie Lit references are always good as far as I’m concerned.

[name_m]Carl[/name_m]/[name_m]Karl[/name_m] is kind of dorky and/or overbearing…[name_m]Charles[/name_m]/[name_u]Charlie[/name_u] is handsome & sweet.

[name_m]Carl[/name_m] is my husband’s name and he hates it. It’s extremely old sounding so not many people his age, 30, have it so it’ll be extremely grandpa esque without being classic for your child. It’s oddly commonly misspelled. When we’re out and he tells someone his name is [name_m]Carl[/name_m] they typically write it as [name_f]Carol[/name_f].

I told my husband you posted this and he told me to tell you that he’d encourage you to use it as a middle name instead of a first name. He really hated growing up with having such a “hillbilly grandpa name.”

Terrible idea. [name_m]Just[/name_m] as the name “[name_m]Johnson[/name_m]” would be a terrible idea. Too much (predominantly) adolescent boy/male teasing potential. My sister’s cat is named [name_m]Carl[/name_m] so it’s sorta funny when he’s referred to as “Steaming [name_m]Carl[/name_m]” or “hot [name_m]Carl[/name_m]” but that would be awful for a real 13-year-old child.

When I was growing up, my Dad had a friend named [name_m]Carl[/name_m] who used to come around alot. He was funny, friendly and gentle. Nothing wrong with the name [name_m]Carl[/name_m]!
