How do you feel about virtue and emotion names

[name]How[/name] do you feel about virtue and emotion type names like [name]Joy[/name], [name]Happy[/name], [name]Justice[/name], and [name]Peace[/name]. Be completely honest [name]Jeff[/name] and I have been playing around with these types of names and some appeal to us but we wondered if you gave one child a name from this theme wouldn’t you make all the kids names from the same theme?

Tell us how you guys feel we are just looking on thoughts and may never use these types of names anyway but we just want to see your opinions.

Anyway if you like these types of names maybe add on your favorites just for reference, if you don’t just tell us why ect.

Honestly, I’m not a big fan. I just don’t like a majority of word names personally. I kinda feel like it pushes a trait on them that they may not have. [name]One[/name] example is [name]Faith[/name] or [name]Heaven[/name] - what if the kid ends up an atheist?

That said though, I think some are nice, just depends on the name. I don’t think you’d have to follow a theme… actually I might think that’s cheesy to have kids named [name]Hope[/name], [name]Faith[/name], and [name]Justice[/name]. I know someone that just named their daughter [name]Faith[/name]. Her older sister’s name is [name]Paige[/name]. They don’t “match” but I think they go nicely together. I also know people named [name]Hope[/name] and [name]Grace[/name], and I’m pretty sure their siblings don’t have virtue names.

What about the feeling/emotion/virtue names that are rarely used like

Curious (I have actually met someone with this name)
[name]Serene[/name]
Proud
Courage
[name]Honor[/name]
Modest
Sublime
[name]Patience[/name]
Tact
Thrift
Zeal

I dislike them as a whole; I think they come off as down-market. The exceptions are [name]Verity[/name], [name]Faith[/name], [name]Hope[/name], [name]Grace[/name], and [name]Joy[/name].

I guess i just don’t completely understand the whole “I dislike word names” considering that at some point all the names that are now considered classics were word names or at least somewhat word names, someone came up with a name that meant this or meant that just these types of names are more blunt about the meaning. Although i value the opinions i have received so far i just can see how rarely used names such as these will never have a chance to be considered the exceptions like [name]Faith[/name] and [name]Grace[/name] unless people use them.

My favorite virtue names are [name]Felicity[/name], [name]Temperance[/name], and [name]Verity[/name]. Not a fan of [name]Faith[/name], [name]Hope[/name], [name]Grace[/name], [name]Joy[/name]… I just feel like they are so overdone. Also don’t like [name]Amity[/name], [name]Charity[/name], [name]Comfort[/name], [name]Justice[/name], [name]Modesty[/name], [name]Patience[/name], [name]Prudence[/name], [name]Remember[/name] - all names I’ve heard on people, but I either don’t like the meaning, the pronunciation or both.

[name]Honor[/name] isn’t terrible, but I really don’t like any of the others. I just think they would make silly names, but that is just my opinion.

There are some virtue names I really like (and some I even love): [name]Grace[/name], [name]Joy[/name], [name]Felicity[/name], [name]Blythe[/name], [name]Merry[/name], etc…
I do not think that most of the names on your 2nd post (the ‘rarely-used’ ones) even seem like names. [name]Just[/name] my opinion, but I think the majority of them would be a tough haul to carry off!
Of those mentioned, I think [name]Serene[/name] is kind of nice, but prefer [name]Serena[/name] (the name that [name]Serene[/name] derives from anyway). There is something vaguely appealing to me about the name [name]Patience[/name], but I can’t quite put my finger on it at the moment.

Best!

I like some more quirky virtue/word names like…

Solace
Lovejoy/Loveday
Makepeace
Steadfast
[name]Prosper[/name]
Radiance
[name]Patience[/name]
[name]Prudence[/name]
Revere

As well as more mainstream ones like…

[name]Grace[/name]
[name]Felicity[/name]
[name]Verity[/name]

I love prosper but that’s because of the book “The Thief [name]Lord[/name]” with the brothers [name]Prosper[/name] and [name]Bo[/name]

I know a baby [name]Clarity[/name], and an adult named [name]Patience[/name]. I don’t know how the name [name]Clarity[/name] will affect her (it’s close enough to [name]Claire[/name], and most children would have no idea what the word meant) but I do know that by elementary school, [name]Patience[/name] was sick and tired of hearing “have patience - [name]Patience[/name]!”

Although i value the opinions i have received so far i just can see how rarely used names such as these will never have a chance to be considered the exceptions like Faith and Grace unless people use them.

I understand, but also consider you are naming an actual child, not just doing your part to advance the scape of naming. A little Sublime may not appreciate her name very much.

You’re all ignoring a large group of word names: flower names! Though, for the most part, their all very nice, so that’s not really part of this.

As for virtue names: I’m not really sure. [name]Felicity[/name] is more of a name than a virtue to me at this point. [name]Grace[/name], [name]Joy[/name], [name]Faith[/name] (maybe even [name]Justice[/name], with it’s similarity to [name]Justin[/name]) are so well-represented as names they don’t seem like words at this point when used for a person. I’d advise you not to experiment on your own kid, in short.

I like some virtue names, but some of them just come across as silly. My favorites are [name]Amity[/name] and [name]Serena[/name].

Word names, I also think it just comes down to the word. [name]Rose[/name] is perfectly fine, while a random word like ‘dirt’ wouldn’t work at all.

The only virtue names I really like are

[name]Adora[/name]
[name]Blythe[/name]
[name]Clemence[/name]
[name]Felicity[/name]
[name]Gloria[/name] (I guess a virtue name from [name]Glory[/name])
[name]Honor[/name]
[name]Prudence[/name]
[name]Serenity[/name]
[name]Verity[/name]

I knew a girl in middle school whose name was [name]Chastity[/name]. She despised her name with a passion and only went by [name]Chaz[/name]. That is the type of name that in my opinion is not good.

To one of the above posters: I love flower names! They are really cute, but a lot of the nice ones are getting too popular.

I generally dislike them, except sometimes in the middle - as a sort of tribute of some sort, I can see the appeal. However, there are a few names I like that I guess fall into this category, like [name]Felicity[/name]. I also don’t mind [name]Verity[/name] or [name]Patience[/name], but names like [name]Faith[/name] and [name]Grace[/name] are a bit boring to me, and others seem too preach-y.

Well i understand that it would be an actual child, and i am not saying to experiment with the name or try to advance it either but if the parents love the name why not use it no matter what others say, I feel that the child would appreciate the name if she/he knew it was because the parents loved the name for said child too much to part with it no matter how unusual.

I also really love flower names as well although i am leaning toward tree ones more.

Although I feel names like Grace, Joy etc are too mainstream, I catch myself liking the idea behind virtue names. You know, they’re giving the child motivation to become an ethic person. I’m especially fond of Verity and Genesis, which, unlike Temperance, Prudence, orChastity, don’t have such a strict aspect to them. I might even go as far as to suggest Cherish as a baby name due to its possible nickname Cher, a personal favourite.

Despite that, I believe virtue names could really bog you down in the sense that as it grows up, the kid may think you are trying to confine its behavior through its given name. Furthermore, there is a great risk in naming a child with a virtue name because the name tends to wrongly define it in the eyes of others, leading to labels. (ex. “Oh, Merry? She must be a happy one”, while the girl might actually be very shy and reserved).

P.S. For some reason, I find Fidelia to be a very unique alternative to Faith. Just saying xD

I absolutely [name]LOVE[/name] virtue names. Favs are
[name]Ransom[/name] (b)

[name]Glory[/name]

[name]Verity[/name]
[name]Liberty[/name]
[name]Valor[/name] (b)
[name]Justice[/name]
[name]Loyal[/name] (b)
