How do you pronounce Arielle?

(Wrote a long post but I lost it! Here’s the short version)

[name_f]My[/name_f] cousin got engaged to a girl named [name_f]Arielle[/name_f], my mom got to meet her last weekend when she was visiting with my grandparents. So she greeting her by her name, [name_f]Arielle[/name_f] (pronouncing the beginning like it was rhyming with air) she corrected my mom saying that her name was pronounced “[name_u]ARI[/name_u]-elle” (pronouncing the beginning like it was rhyming with “tar” so the name sounded like the initials R-E-L) I’ve never heard this pronunciation before! Is this how it’s really pronounced or are her parents a little wonky?

I tend to use all of the pronunciations (arry-[name_f]ELLE[/name_f], ah-ree-elle, AIRY-elle) depending on my mood I think…

I’ve always pronounced it like the mermaid (like [name_u]Ariel[/name_u], or “air-ee-elle”). But I can see how some people would choose to pronounce it the other way, with the first syllable rhyming with “tar,” same as the name [name_f]Ariana[/name_f]. I think the weird spelling ([name_f]Arielle[/name_f] as opposed to [name_u]Ariel[/name_u]) is supposed to indicate the “tar” pronunciation.

I’ve always pronounced [name_f]Arielle[/name_f] “ar-ee-elle” and [name_u]Ariel[/name_u] “air-ee-el” but I believe that both pronunciations are legit for both spellings. So in short, no, her parents weren’t wonky. :slight_smile:

I pronounce it like R-E-L. I know two girls with this name and they both pronounce it like that, so I guess it just comes more naturally to me.

Are-ee-ell. I blame The [name_m]Little[/name_m] Mermaid for the ubiquity of the air-ee-ell pronunciation.

I say R.E.L. I’ve met about 3 girls with the name and they all pronounced it that way.

I say A-ree-[name_f]Elle[/name_f] (A like in apple), and [name_u]Ariel[/name_u], [name_f]Air[/name_f]-ree-elle. With A names, I usually say them as either [name_m]Ah[/name_m] or A (usually A). The [name_f]Air[/name_f] sound doesn’t come naturally to me and I dislike it.

Yep, ‘ah-ree-[name_f]ELLE[/name_f]’ or ‘ARRY-elle’ is how I’ve heard [name_f]Arielle[/name_f] pronounced.

I used to work with a woman named [name_f]Arielle[/name_f] and it was r-e-l. I’ve always considered [name_f]Arielle[/name_f] and [name_u]Ariel[/name_u] to have two different pronunciations.

Technically…R E L makes sense…but I prefer Airy-[name_f]Elle[/name_f]…I guess it’s just preference…like [name_f]Cara[/name_f] can be Care-uh or Car-uh.

[name_f]Arielle[/name_f] is the [name_m]French[/name_m] version of [name_u]Ariel[/name_u] so it should be pronounced “ar-ee-[name_f]ELLE[/name_f]” with the emphasis on the last syllable.
