[name]Aurelia[/name] is amazing! I love it, and I wish someone would use it! It has such a regal, princess-like sound!
I say it as awr-[name]REY[/name]-lee-uh. Okay, that first syllable doesn’t make much sense, but it is a bit like “are” but with more of a rounded vowel sound. Definitely four syllables, though!
Well, just as some people pronounce [name]Dahlia[/name], “[name]Dal[/name]-ya” and some pronounce it “[name]Dal[/name]-ee-ya”, you would encounter a regional dialect difference, between whether it’s “[name]Aurel[/name]-ya” or “[name]Aure[/name]-li-ya” but to me, not being a Southerner, it has 4 syllables, as in “Au-re-li-a”
which is how it would be pronounced in the original Spanish or Latin.
“Aw-REH-lee-ya” is how I think most people would say it, including Spanish speakers.
I pronounce it kind of between three and four syllables, if that makes sense. It’s not totally aw-REL-ya when I say it, but not quite aw-REL-ee-ya either. But I think the difference is so small between those two pronunciations that it doesn’t really matter much.
I love [name]Aurelia[/name]! It’s one of my favorite names, but I can never really get the pronunciation straight in my head. When I first came across it I pronounced it ‘a-[name]REE[/name]-lee ah’ but now I think it’s more like ‘a-RAYL-ee-a’. I pronounce ‘-ee-a’ and ‘-ya’ the same, so it’s four syllables-- maybe three and a half. I’d like to know the ‘real’ pronunciation, if there is one.
I personally think that if you want the syllables annonciated then you should try going with [name]Aurelie[/name] instead. It forces all the syllables to heard.
I agree. THIS IS MY [name]FAVORITE[/name] NAME. Not only would I use it in a heartbeat on my own daughter, but it’s also kind of my secret pseudonym.
I’m a little nervous that the general consensus seems to have the “[name]RAY[/name]” instead of the “REEL.” I think the nickname Reely is adorable (see my silly username), but I don’t want to be mispronouncing my favorite name! I’ve always known that the Latin and Spanish pronunciations are aw-[name]RAY[/name]-lee-a, so is my “aw-REEL-ee-a” Americanizing the name – I hate Americanizations! But I like my way of saying it! Oh no!
At any rate, I say probably three-and-a-half or four syllables.
[name]Aurelia[/name]. sigh
Such a gorgeous name! I say uh-[name]RAY[/name]-lee-uh, which I believe is how it’s pronounced in the movie [name]Love[/name] Actually, where I first heard the name.
I first found it in a book (I forget which) I read a few years ago, so I didn’t actually hear it pronounced. Actually, I expected that most people would say aw-REEL-ya/aw-REEL-ee-ya/aw-REEL-ee-a like [name]Amelia[/name], [name]Cordelia[/name], [name]Cornelia[/name], [name]Ophelia[/name], etc… That’s how I said it at first, and then someone on another board mentioned the [name]RAY[/name]/RAYL pronunciation and then the REL…
Behind the Name says that the Polish pronunciation is ow-REL-yah, but I’ve heard so many other pronunciations from other sites…
naimh-n-colm - I don’t have many middle names ideas yet, actually - ideas, anyone? I’m not pregnant, though, nor will I be anytime soon, so this is entirely hypothetical…
