I just met a little girl named [name_f]Norah[/name_f] Avonlea and about died! I was working so I was unable to ask her mom any details about her name beyond what her full name was. I’m just curious about how it is pronounced…
A-vən-lee
The village where “[name_f]Anne[/name_f] of [name_u]Green[/name_u] Gables” is set. Beautiful name. [name_f]Norah[/name_f] Avonlea is beautiful.
Mentally I pronounce it A-von-lee-ah or ah-[name_m]VON[/name_m]-lee-ah. Both of which I’m sure are terribly incorrect.
I just asked my friend from [name_m]PEI[/name_m] and she says “a-vən-[name_u]LEE[/name_u]”, with the stress on the final syllable. I’ve always heard it like that on TV, too.
“[name_f]Heavenly[/name_f],” but with the first syllable pronounced like “have” without the “H” - i.e. “AV-ən-lee”

I know name pronunciations are subjective, but as a Canadian, and avid reader of [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] [name_f]Maude[/name_f] [name_m]Montgomery[/name_m]'s [name_f]Anne[/name_f] of [name_u]Green[/name_u] Gables books (set in Avonlea, [name_m]Prince[/name_m] [name_m]Edward[/name_m] Island) and viewer of the CBC’s Road to Avonlea series, there’s only one way for me to see and hear this name: [name_m]AH[/name_m]-von-lee. If you’re looking for the “correct” pronunciation, that’s it.
[name_m]Ah[/name_m]-von-lee, I guess. That’s a tough one!
