I’d pronounce it [name_f]Bee[/name_f]-ah, because I’ve only ever known it as a nickname for [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f]/[name_f]Beatrix[/name_f]. I don’t think it would make a difference if it was a stand alone name, because I’d still associate it with the nickname and so would pronounce it the same.
I pronounce it bee. I had a friend in high school that had the nickname [name_f]Bea[/name_f], her name was [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f]. I have also met/known a few others, all pronounced bee. I would assume the bee pronunciation no matter if it was a nickname or a stand-alone name.
Here’s the link to behind the name.
[name_f]Bee[/name_f]! Either as a stand-alone name or nickname. It’s how [name_f]Bea[/name_f] [name_m]Arthur[/name_m] pronounced her name and I think that’s where I first heard it. It’s what we call our daughter and there hasn’t been any confusion about it so far.
I know [name_f]Bea[/name_f] can be said ‘bee’, but the overly logical side of me thinks it makes much more sense for it to be [name_f]Bee[/name_f]-uh, especially as a nn for [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f]/[name_f]Beatrix[/name_f]. ‘[name_f]Bee[/name_f]’ I would spell [name_f]Bee[/name_f] or just B (for a nn).
I pronounce it [name_f]Bee[/name_f]-uh.
Ok, follow-up questions. [name_f]Do[/name_f] you all think [name_f]Bea[/name_f] works as a given name? [name_f]Do[/name_f] you prefer [name_f]Bee[/name_f] or [name_f]Bea[/name_f]? Middle name ideas??
I automatically read it as [name_f]Bee[/name_f]-uh.
I know someone who has the nickname [name_f]Bee[/name_f] pronounced as it reads. So to me it would make more sense to spell it [name_f]Bee[/name_f], if that’s the pronunciation that is desired!
I know quite a few [name_f]Bea[/name_f]'s (short for [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f]) that say it ‘bee’. I prefer the name as a short form, not a standalone. However, if it was going to be a standalone, I’d definitely definitely spell it [name_f]Bea[/name_f] and not [name_f]Bee[/name_f].
Definitely pronounced [name_f]Bee[/name_f] for me. I had a friend who went by [name_f]Bea[/name_f], short for [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f]. I’ve personally never know anyone pronounce it [name_f]Bee[/name_f]-uh. I may well be mistaken, but the pronunciation [name_f]Bee[/name_f]-uh sounds wrong to me - as though someone isn’t familiar with the name.
I too would spell it [name_f]Bea[/name_f] if using it in it’s short form.
I would pronounce it [name_f]Bee[/name_f]-ah, assuming it was short for [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f]/[name_f]Beatrix[/name_f], or just [name_f]Bee[/name_f] by itself.
Disclaimer: I’ve never met or known anyone with this name, nor have I ever been aware of it being said out loud around me. Thus, all my opinion is just what I would naturally be inclined to say…
I obviously don’t know the “right” way, but I thought about it, and my conclusion is that pronouncing it “bee” seems like being named Joanna and nicknamed Joa, but pronouncing it “Jo.”
I had no idea people pronounced it Bee. I knew it was short for Beatrice, but the name isn’t bee-triss, it’s bee-uh-triss (right?! that’s what the “a” is for, to change it from “bee-triss” to “bee-uh-triss”), so why would the letter put in the name to add a different sound, be pronounced without its sound… you know? Am I making sense? Why wouldn’t you just spell it Bee or B? Idk, though. Like I said, I’ve never heard it out loud that I’m aware of, and names and their nicknames don’t always make sense. ¯_(ツ)_/¯
I say bee-ah, like the first two syllables of [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f]/[name_f]Beatrix[/name_f]. I think it’s prettier than the bee pronunciation, but I think most people will say it as bee.
