How do you pronounce "Evelyn"?

I love the name [name_u]Evelyn[/name_u], I think it’s stylish and super classy but I pronounce it “[name_u]Ever[/name_u]-[name_u]Lyn[/name_u]” as opposed to “[name_f]Eve[/name_f]-[name_u]Lyn[/name_u]” and I much prefer “[name_u]Ever[/name_u]-[name_u]Lyn[/name_u]” but spelled the classic [name_u]Evelyn[/name_u].

I know it’s one of those that can be pronounced both ways, so how would you personally pronounce [name_u]Evelyn[/name_u]?

Would I have to spell it Everlyn to get people to pronounce it correctly? (I really don’t want to do that!) ir would it be a lifetime of correcting all those people who say “[name_f]Eve[/name_f]-[name_u]Lyn[/name_u]”?

I pronounce it EV-uh-luhn. I think the [name_f]EVE[/name_f]-luhn pronunciation is an earlier British way of saying the name when it was principally a male name? Someone could correct me on this.

Yeah I also say Ev-Uh-[name_u]Lyn[/name_u] :). Never actually hear [name_f]Eve[/name_f]-[name_u]Lyn[/name_u] before!

I pronounce it ev-uh-lyn … never heard it said any other way.

I would also pronounce it EV-uh-lin or EV-uh-luhn. In my accent, we don’t pronounce our 'R’s as strongly as in some American accents, so [name_u]Evelyn[/name_u] and Everlyn would be pronounced the same.
I’ve never heard the pronunciation “eev-lyn”, but I also don’t live in the USA.

I’ve only ever heard [name_f]Eve[/name_f]-lyn on Downton [name_u]Abbey[/name_u], everywhere else [name_m]IRL[/name_m] people seem to say EV-uh-lin.

I definitely wouldn’t spell it Everlyn, because to anyone who pronounces their R’s, that’s a completely different name. I think you’d be fine pronouncing it your way and spelling it [name_u]Evelyn[/name_u].

I know two newborn Evelyns - one is [name_f]Eve[/name_f]-lyn and the other one is Ev-uh-lyn. In the UK at least, I would say Ev-uh-lyn is the more expected pronunciation, but I think you probably just need to tell people once they’ll remember from there. I wouldn’t mess with the spelling, it’s such a pretty classic name.

Ev-uh-lyn. As someone else mentioned, I’ve only ever heard it pronounced [name_f]Eve[/name_f]-lyn as a male name, and even then not often. Certainly not any time recently!

I say ev-uh-lyn and have only heard that pronunciation before. If you want ever-lyn, I think you might have to spell it with the R in there.

I’d say [name_u]Evelyn[/name_u] like EV-uh-lyn. My mom has a friend named [name_f]Eve[/name_f]-[name_u]Lynn[/name_u] who says it EEV-lyn but that’s the only way I’d ever pronounce it like that.

This name always reminds me of the (male) author [name_u]Evelyn[/name_u] Waugh-- his wife was also named [name_u]Evelyn[/name_u], and apparently friends would call her “Shevelyn” to distinguish them!

None of that has to do with pronunciation, I just find it amusing

I’ve always pronounced the name like “Evil-in” or “Ev-lin”

I pronounce it [name_f]Eve[/name_f]-lyn, but I wouldn’t be surprised if it was pronounced [name_u]Ever[/name_u]-lin either - I’ve heard the latter more often actually

I pronounce it EV-lyn, just two syllables. I’ve heard it pronounced Eev-lyn only once, and it was on a film rather than in person. I would be really surprised to hear it pronounced [name_u]Ever[/name_u]-lyn because there’s no R in it, and Rs are really pronounced in my accent, but I wouldn’t be surprised to hear Ev-uh-lyn.

I remember reading before that Eev-lyn was originally the masculine pronounciation like araminty said, but I’m not sure how relevant that is today.

I read that the original British pronunciation was “Eev-lin”, but that it was altered to “Ev-uh-lin” through association with the continental [name_f]Evelina[/name_f]. I have never met an [name_u]Evelyn[/name_u], but I think the second pronunciation is the default these days, so you probably won’t need to worry about it.

I would expect it to be pronounced Ev-uh-lin.

I say EV-uh-lin, except for EEV-uh-lin Waugh. (Not sure that’s even the correct pronunciation of his name, but it’s what I’ve heard, I guess?)

I’ve always heard it pronounced ev-uh-lyn here in [name_f]Canada[/name_f] (what you would pronounce ever-lyn as). I knew a girl from [name_m]Britain[/name_m] named [name_u]Evelyn[/name_u] who pronounced it eve-lyn though, so I assumed ev-uh-lyn was the Canadian/American way of saying it and eve-lyn the British way. From the replies here it doesn’t seem like that’s the case though.

I’m in [name_f]England[/name_f] and I’d say EV-uh-lin. Never heard [name_f]EVE[/name_f]-lin except on NB.

If I see [name_u]Evelyn[/name_u] I automatically say ‘[name_u]Ever[/name_u]-lyn’

I pronounce [name_u]Evelyn[/name_u] as Eev-[name_u]Lyn[/name_u], mainly because I think it’s prettier that way. Most people I know would pronounce it Ev-uh-lyn.
