[name_m]How[/name_m] do you pronounce [name_f]Isolde[/name_f]? It was one of my favorite names until I realized that my pronunciation was probably incorrect and I didn’t know what the legitimate one was. I’ve heard various answers. Since [name_f]Isolde[/name_f] seems to be mildly popular here on Nameberry, I was wondering how Berries pronounce it.

I say ee-zol-duh/ee-zold-uh (basically the same thing) but not 100% sure it’s correct. I think this is one of those names with multiple legitimate pronunciations though, like [name_f]Helena[/name_f] or [name_f]Madeleine[/name_f].
I pronounce it ee-sold but I’m not sure if that is remotely correct or the original pronunciation

In [name_u]Tristan[/name_u] and [name_f]Isolde[/name_f], they pronounce it ee-zold-eh so that’s how I’ve always pronounced it.
I say Ee-zold.
It’s three syllables. I say ee-ZOL-deh.
I see that a lot of people have been saying EE-zold-eh or something close to that but I have always said Ih-zold just like on [name_u]Tristen[/name_u] and [name_f]Isolde[/name_f]. I’ve loved the name ever sense the movie came out. [name_f]Love[/name_f] the name!!
I say “ee-[name_m]SOL[/name_m]-duh” or “ee-ZOL-duh”.
My [name_m]French[/name_m] teacher always said ee-SOLD-uh, with the last syllable said very softly and shortly, barely even a syllable at all.
Is-ohl-duh, though I’ve no idea if it’s correct.
I say ee-zol-deh because that was how they pronounced it on [name_m]Merlin[/name_m], the TV show, and I guess it stuck.
ee-zold-uh is legit in [name_m]German[/name_m] but I don’t really like it and enjoy spiting [name_m]Wagner[/name_m] so I don’t favour that one.
Ee-zold/Ee-sold are equally legit (not honestly better but not honestly worse) and I prefer the sound. The [name_m]French[/name_m] version has a VERY slight third syllable but it’s closer to two. I like it.
ih-zold I don’t mind at all, in fact I rather like it, but I don’t know if it’s a legit variation or what.
[name_f]Iseult[/name_f] is related and most seem agreed it’s ee-salt in Gaelic. What that’s worth to you might not be much.

Like the others, I would have guessed the ‘e’ was silent, otherwise it would be Isoldie or [name_f]Isold[/name_f]é - but I’m not sure! Apparently it has Gaelic roots, which you can see in the redundant ‘e’ as in Middle English they commonly use spelling such as ‘Ye Olde’ etc… And then of course we dropped the 'e’s later on which makes me think we never pronounced them. I just got sidetracked Googling the name and apparently [name_f]Isolde[/name_f] was an Irish [name_f]Princess[/name_f] betrothed to [name_m]King[/name_m] [name_m]Mark[/name_m] of Cornwall, who became the lover of his knight [name_u]Tristan[/name_u], which led to their tragic deaths. Romantic!
