How do you pronounce Leonie?

I discovered the name [name]Leonie[/name] not to long ago, but I don’t know how to pronounce it. Is it:

[name]Lay[/name]-oh-nee
[name]Lee[/name]-oh-nee
[name]Lee[/name]-on-ee

I’ve been pronouncing it [name]Lay[/name]-oh-knee and I think that sounds really pretty, but I don’t know if that’s right. [name]How[/name] do you all pronounce it?

I would pronounce it lee-OH-knee. However, I do not actually know if that is correct.

I prn. it lay-oh-nee, I love it. It is a French name to me so that is why I prn it that way, but someone may know for sure. According to NB, it can be prn. any way!

But lay-OH-nee is prettier

My daughter is [name]Lee[/name]-oh-nee, but it gets pronounced [name]Lay[/name]-oh-nee a lot. Either is lovely imo.

I pronounce it [name]LEE[/name]-OH-KNEE. I have known a couple and they have always pronounced it like that. I do think [name]Lay[/name]-oh-nee is very pretty though. And the problem is that if you wrote it phonetically - like Laonie or Layonie it just looks SO wrong! So stick with [name]Leonie[/name] and pronounce it either way :slight_smile:

I think all are fine. I pronounce it [name]LEE[/name]-uh-nee but all make sense. It’ll be corrected all the time, regardless but it’s a really delightful name.

I say [name]Lee[/name]-oh-nee, but [name]Lay[/name]-oh-nee is prettier and also makes sense. Well, it probably needs an accent in the e or something technically, but still…I think you could get away with either pronunciation.

I immediately think lee-OH-nee, though lay-OH-nee is gorgeous and I’d know it to be the same name if I heard it aloud.
It (or [name]Leona[/name], leonora) is on my list for middles. [name]Lovely[/name] sounding names.

This thread is sort of funny to me because I have a great-aunt [name]Leonie[/name], and when i was really young I was always so confused because everyone would pronounce it differently and I never knew who they were talking about, until I was about 7 and I realized it was all about the same woman.

Anyway my point is, yes everyone seems to pronounce it differently, but they all know who you’re talking about in the end, so different pronunciations end up not being a huge problem, or so it would seem from my experiences at least.

The different ways I’ve heard it said are:

I pronounce it the French way with [name]Lay[/name] up front. It can go either way though [name]IMO[/name].

I pronounce it Leh-OH-nee, But I’ve also heard [name]Leo[/name]-knee.

I’d pronounce it leh-o-nee which is the French prononciation. It would probably need an accent tho.
