How do you pronounce Levi?

Hello. So I would just like to get everyone’s comments on how you say this name.

I used to pronounce it [name_u]Lee[/name_u]-vy (rhyming with eye) until I met someone with that name and he says it [name_m]Lay[/name_m]-vee. I instantly loved this other pronunciation and it made me like the name even more but I’m still unsure what pronunciation is most common/popular.

I would pronounce it lee-vye but I think it’d be an easy correction!

Lee-vye is the only pronunciation I’ve ever heard, but I’ve seen it pronounced online as [name_u]Lee[/name_u]-vee and [name_m]Lay[/name_m]-vee and honestly I’m not a fan. [name_u]Lee[/name_u]-vye is the best pronunciation in my not so humble opinion :joy:

I have never heard it pronounced lay-vee, only lee-vye.

lee-vye is definitely the more common pronunciation, but unless you really don’t want your son to have to correct pronunciations all the time it’s not that bad to correct to lay-vee.

I also just have to add that Levi written out in Hebrew is usually spelled לוי or לבי, both of which only lead to the lee-vye pronunciation. That’s why the other pronunciations make me pause, but outside of a Jewish circle I honestly don’t think anyone would care (and most Jews wouldn’t care anyway, probably just make them pause like it did for me if they even noticed :slightly_smiling_face:)

Actually, in Hebrew it would be lay-vee or lev-vee לֵוִי because of the vowel below the lamed. Lee-vye is the anglicized pronunciation.

While most people in the US pronounce it as Levi (especially non-Jews) I prefer Levi or Levy pronounced like Leh-vee.

Wouldn’t lay-vee be ליוי? And doesn’t the yud mean that the vowel on the v sound has to be ee or ey? Wait I’m stupid I meant eye.

has my hebrew school been lying to me my whole life about pronunciation lmao

I love the name [name_u]Levi[/name_u]! I pronounce it [name_u]Lee[/name_u]-vye. As @Babies123456 said, I think Leh-vee is another acceptable pronunciation that I’ve heard, and I’ll take their word for it on [name_m]Lay[/name_m]-vee!

My instinct, and I think the instinct of a lot of people, is to pronounce it [name_u]Lee[/name_u]-vye, it’s an easy fix to switch to your preferred pronunciation (although I prefer [name_u]Lee[/name_u]-vye or Leh-vee).

I’ve heard mixed things about the yud at the end :joy: but the two dot vowel (not sure what it’s called) is pronounced as ay, whereas a one dot (cheereek) is pronounced as ee. If I saw [name_u]Levi[/name_u]/Levy in a Hebrew text I’d definitely pronounce it as [name_m]Lev[/name_m]-vee even though the double dot says ay.

Its interesting some people pronounce it Leh-vee. I prefer [name_u]Lee[/name_u]-vai.

Leave - eye

I’d say lee-vye, like the jeans.

To me, [name_u]Levi[/name_u] is like the jeans and [name_m]Levy[/name_m] (which I’ve encountered many times as a surname) is either leh-vee or lee-vee.

I’d instinctively pronounce it [name_u]Lee[/name_u]-vye

Lay-vee is the common [name_m]Dutch[/name_m] pronounciation. It’s like the beginning of [name_u]Lake[/name_u] and Vie from la Vie en rose. I think it is really sweet and sounds better than lee-vye but maybe that is because i’m used tot it!
I [name_m]Will[/name_m] try to add a audio message to make it more clear

I’d say [name_u]Lee[/name_u] Vy, rhyming with Eye. Layvee is interesting but I feel if you’re in the US, you’re constantly going to be correcting others. There’s such a strong connection to the brand that everyone pronounces that way. I do like the name!

Lee-vye

This is the only way I’ve ever heard it pronounced.

Lee-vy (eye)
