I prefer the lou-iss pronunciation but I know a lot of people use Lou-ee as well. Will this cause confusion and frustration since it can be pronounced both ways? Which do you think is more common? I know Lewis is also an option but I don’t like how that looks as much. It reminds me a little of lewd.
I’d say Lou-ee instinctively, but I’ve heard lou-iss too and I think that pn is more common in the US?
I always pronounce Louis as loo-ee, but it’s not that hard to switch! Louis pronounced loo-iss would go over fine!
I think in the US most people will say loo-is. I do love the loo-ee pronunciation too though.
I instinctively say lou-ee, as this is my preferred pronunciation.
But I used to instinctively say lou-iss as I knew two Louis’ who each pronounced their name differently (one was lou-ee, other was lou-iss) and I had only ever seen lou-iss’ name written for a long time. It wasn’t until I had also seen lou-ee’s name written that I learned it could be pronounced two ways.
This is one of those few names that I try not to pronounce until I have heard someone else say the name for that particular individual.
Lou-iss. I’m from the States and, as someone else said, I think that tends to be the more common pronunciation here.
I automatically pronounce it Lou-ee, but if I am in the [name_u]Southern[/name_u] US I say Lou-iss because that pronunciation is more common there.
[name_f]My[/name_f] great-uncle [name_m]Louis[/name_m] pronounced his name Lou-ee, so that’s the first way I heard it said. I think it really depends on the region in the US you are from.
I like the name either way, and [name_m]Louis[/name_m] was definitely on my list if I’d had another son.
I’m from the UK and i’ve met both pronunciations multiple times so neither would surprise me. I prefer Lou-ee in general.
I pronounce it Loo-ee, I’m in the UK.
I’m American, I pronounce it Lou-ee, the other pronunciation mentioned is spelled [name_m]Lewis[/name_m] to me intuitively but it does also work as [name_m]Louis[/name_m] and I’ve seen it done that way before so no worries imo!
The only one I’ve ever met said it loo-iss so that’s how I’ve always said it. In [name_u]New[/name_u] [name_u]York[/name_u] if that makes a difference to you
I say loo-ee instinctively (the more common pronunciation here in Australia) but I think in the US loo-is is more commonly used so if you’re there you should be fine with your preferred pronunciation.
I pronounce it lou-iss
[name_m]Just[/name_m] wanted to say that I’m from [name_f]Canada[/name_f]!
The same way I saw [name_m]Lewis[/name_m]
I say Loo-ee, but I’m from the UK. I assume it’s usually [name_m]Lewis[/name_m] in the US (like the city).
Lou-iss
[name_m]Louis[/name_m] is the US is pronounced ‘lou-iss’ but everywhere else it’s pronounced ‘lou-ee’
I would pronounce it ‘lou-ee’ bc it is the ‘correct/original’ pronunciation, but I wouldn’t bat an eye if they corrected me and told me they pronounce it ‘lou-iss’ if I’m in the US.
[name_f]Hope[/name_f] that makes sense!
