How do YOU pronounce Margaret?

Crowdsourcing here.

[name_f]Do[/name_f] you say it:

[name_f]Mar[/name_f]-ga-ret with a short E sound like net,

or do you say

[name_f]Mar[/name_f]-grit, like pit.

Also, what are your opinions of the name in general? [name_m]Favorite[/name_m] nickname option?

Thanks!

[name_f]My[/name_f] name is [name_f]Margaret[/name_f], and I pronounce it the first way, which is so much prettier than [name_f]Mar[/name_f]-grit. I quite like it, because it’s classic, timeless, and has a ton of cute nicknames. [name_f]My[/name_f] husband calls me [name_f]Margo[/name_f] in private, but most of the time I’m [name_f]Meg[/name_f], after the character in my mom’s favorite childhood book, [name_m]Little[/name_m] Women. However, I also think [name_f]Maggie[/name_f] is really sweet, and [name_f]Daisy[/name_f] is fun twist, although most people probably wouldn’t get the connection without explanation.

I say “[name_f]Mar[/name_f]-g-ret”. But that could be because my “g” sounds are always very enunciated because of the way I talk.

I say [name_f]MAR[/name_f]-gruht and didn’t know that there was another way to pronounce it!

I definitely pronounce it closer to “[name_f]Mar[/name_f]-grit”, but sometimes more like “[name_f]Mar[/name_f]-guhrit” with an extra half syllable “uh” thrown into there. So 2 or 2.5 syllables at most. And it hardly makes a difference; they sound almost identical. I’ve heard both I think, but never three fully pronounced syllables.

I say [name_f]Mar[/name_f]-ga-ret, but that’s because it’s how my grandmother has always said her name. I think a cute little pet name would be [name_f]Pearl[/name_f], and I like [name_f]Maisie[/name_f] as a nickname.

I say it more like [name_f]Mar[/name_f]-gret. (definitely like “net” and not like “pit” but will two syllables.

I pronounce it closer to [name_f]Mar[/name_f]-grit

I say [name_f]Mar[/name_f]-gah-ret, with 3 syllables. I think [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] is a sweet name, classic but not boring or overused and [name_f]Maggie[/name_f], [name_f]Maisie[/name_f], [name_f]Greta[/name_f] and [name_f]Mamie[/name_f] are lovely nicknames.

Two syllables, mar-gret or sometimes mar-grit.

Ditto!

I like [name_f]Mae[/name_f] as the nn for [name_f]Margaret[/name_f].

[name_f]Mar[/name_f]-ga-ret - middle syllable is the shortest. I love the nn [name_f]Daisy[/name_f], and I know it’s an acceptable nn for [name_f]Margaret[/name_f], but I don’t know why (I just googled it and I get it now!)

I pronounce it [name_f]Mar[/name_f]-gret, and I have several favorite nn’s: [name_f]Margot[/name_f], [name_f]Greta[/name_f], [name_f]Mae[/name_f].

I say it somewhere between [name_f]Mar[/name_f]-grit and [name_f]Mar[/name_f]-gret. I would only pronounce the second syllable if it was spelled Magarethe.

[name_f]Mar[/name_f]-grit is what comes out naturally.

[name_f]Mar[/name_f]-ga-ret with a short E sound like net. I love the nicknames [name_f]Margo[/name_f] / [name_f]Margot[/name_f], [name_f]Mamie[/name_f], [name_f]Etta[/name_f], [name_f]May[/name_f], [name_f]Maisie[/name_f], [name_f]Madge[/name_f], [name_f]Meg[/name_f] and [name_f]Maggie[/name_f]. I think it is such a lovely classic name.

[name_f]MARga[/name_f]-rit is how I say it.

I say [name_f]MAR[/name_f]-gruht.

[name_f]Mar[/name_f] gret or mar grught is closest to how I say it.

It’s supposed to be said the first way, but most people will shorten it to “mar-grit” without realizing it. That happens a lot with my name, [name_f]Julia[/name_f]. Instead of saying it like “ju-lee-a” (the way it’s supposed to be said) most people will shorten it to “jul-ya”.
