How do you pronounce Marit?

Is it pronounced like the word “merit” or like “mah-[name_f]REET[/name_f]” (emphasis on second syllable)? Or some other way?

I would think of it as an alternate spelling of Merit/[name_u]Merritt[/name_u], yes!

I would pronounce it like merit.

I would pronounce it like merit. Behindthename says it’s the Swedish and Norwegian form of [name_f]Margaret[/name_f].

I happen to know a girl named [name_f]Marit[/name_f] whose parents are Swedish. She pronounces it MARR-it, so that’s my first thought when I see the name. However, she is constantly correcting people because most assume it’s pronounced Merit. I’m not sure which is “correct” though.

[name_m]Just[/name_m] last week I met another [name_f]Marit[/name_f] pronounced Merit so I have no idea.

I would pronounce it just like Merit! [name_f]MARE[/name_f]-itt

[name_f]MARE[/name_f]-it. Like merit.

If it’s an international variant of [name_f]Margaret[/name_f], then it’s probably probably pronounced MAHR-it or mahr-EET, but I could see it as a spelling variant of Merit too.

If I saw it, I would pronounce it as “[name_f]MAR[/name_f]-it.” I prefer Merit, [name_m]Merrit[/name_m], or Meritt though.

I would probably go for Marr-reet or Mah-reet.
For me Merit is pronounced Meh-ritt, not [name_f]Mare[/name_f]-it. So [name_f]Marit[/name_f] and Merit would be said quite differently in my accent.

I’ve met one person with this name and she pronounced it [name_f]MARE[/name_f]-itt, like Merit.
