How do you pronounce Quillan and what do you think of the name?

[name]Just[/name] wondering how you pronounce the boys name [name]Quillan[/name]?

On this website it says Kill-an but I would pronounce it Kwill (as in feather for writing!!) - an.

[name]Just[/name] wondering if anyone knows how this name should be pronounced as I like it but not if it is pronounced Kill-an!!

Also what do you think of this boys name?

Thanks for you help!

I know on here it says Kill-an but I always assumed it would be pronounced Kwill - an considering that all the other names with Qui at the beginning are pronounced with the Kwuh sound and when you just say [name]Quill[/name] it’s pronounced like the writing utensil. It just makes much more sense.

I just decided to use this name, pronounced kwil-an, for my future sons middle name. I’m using the Greek/Latin version, [name]Quillon[/name] though. Obviously I love it!

[name]Quillan[/name] is really cool! I instinctively have been saying it [name]Quill[/name]-an too–another member has been throwing it around as a possibility for her son.

This website says it’s “kwill-an” too–I usually trust its judgment.

It’s not listed on behindthename.com, which is usually fairly reputable, as well. Hmm.

Good luck!

Well it’s a local grocery store chain here ([name]Quillan[/name]'s, with a four leaf clover/leprocaun logo) and we’ve always said Kwillan, not [name]Killan[/name], so I think most people would pronounce it that way.

I’d definitely say Kwil-an, as I imagine most people would. Very cool name!

I have never heard anything other the Kill-an. It reminds me a lot of [name]Dillon[/name]. Personally I think Kill-an is better than Kwil-an, but that is just me.

I’d pn it Kwill-an. The Kill-an pn is similar to that of the name [name]Killian[/name], which is pn Kill-ian.

I pronounce it Kwill too. Nameberry seems to be the only source I’ve found which specifies the “Kill” sound, and I have wondered if it is connected only with the Latin root only (spelled [name]Quillon[/name]) or the Irish root as well (spelled [name]Quillan[/name]).

Personally I figure the Qu notation is pretty straightforward and recognizable in American English; the name reads [name]Quill[/name] so say [name]Quill[/name]. If someone wanted [name]Killan[/name] then I would say spell it that way or use the similar name [name]Killian[/name]. Otherwise it’s just plain frustrating, like American parents who name their kids [name]Xavier[/name] and [name]Genevieve[/name] but insist on EX-a-vee-er and [name]Zahn[/name]-vee-EV pronunciations. Our language doesn’t [name]DO[/name] that!

Thanks so much girls for your replies…I am really loving this name even more now and feel it is a definite contender for our son due in [name]March[/name]! No doubt I will be posting again with some other possible name contenders in the near future!
