How do you pronounce

the Irish name [name_m]Oisin[/name_m]?

When I heard it the first time on a little boy at the museum, the mother said it “OH-shin” like the English word [name_u]Ocean[/name_u]. Her husband/boyfriend had a very clear Irish accent, so I didn’t question the pronunciation. But when I put it to a friend of mine the other day, she said she’d always heard it as AY-shin. But then her boyfriend chimed in that it was actually uh-[name_m]SHEEN[/name_m] (like “a sheen” of sweat) and his family is also from [name_f]Ireland[/name_f], so I’m completely baffled right now.

Is there a “correct” pronunciation? And, if so, what is it? I think I’d like to put it on my list, but I’d like to know the correct way to say it beforehand! Lol

[name_f]Ireland[/name_f] has like 6+ different accents.

I’ve heard oh-shin and oh-sheen. Oh-sheen is why I can’t use it.

I think most people say ‘o-sheen’ because [name_f]Roisin[/name_f] is ‘ro-sheen’ which is only one letter longer. Whether or not there’s an accent over the last ‘i’ will make a difference to pronunciation as well, without it, like [name_f]Caitlin[/name_f], the ending would be ‘in’ and not ‘een’.

I agree with the person above that it will sound a little different in different Irish accents though. I’ll ask my brother’s girlfriend tonight. She’s from [name_f]Ireland[/name_f].

This name is used in [name_f]Scotland[/name_f] as well and I’ve usually heard it pronounced O-shin, with the O pronounced like in the word ‘socks’. If that makes sence.

I’ve only ever heard it as o-sheen (short O sound) but I’m sure there are regional variations depending on local accents.

I’ve heard Oh-sheen (long o sound) O-sheen (short o sound) and Uh-sheen and think all are correct, depending on accent. I find it really funny how you said that [name_u]Ocean[/name_u] sounds like Oh-shin because in an English accent it doesn’t sound like that. [name_m]Aren[/name_m]'t accents funny

There is normally an accent over the second “i” so I would say “sheen” ([name_m]Oisin[/name_m]/[name_f]Roisin[/name_f]).

I’ve heard O-sheen.
