If spelled Amélie, I pronounce it ah-mé-[name_u]LEE[/name_u] (é doesn’t equal ay for me but as you are familiar with [name_m]French[/name_m] (I think?) you know the sound I’m talking about.
[name_f]Amelie[/name_f] is [name_m]AH[/name_m]-mill-lee to me.
I said [name_m]Ah[/name_m]-Mill-ee but my daughter who speaks french said A-may-lee. so i dont know what to vote for. lol
I guess it would depend on how french the rest of the name or the last name in particular was.
Oh, dear! I’m sorry to have confused you. I’ve always heard a ton of pronunciations but I think [name_m]AH[/name_m]-muh-lee/[name_m]AH[/name_m]-mill-ee/OM-uh-lee is the most common here in [name_u]America[/name_u]? I know a lot of my UK friends will say it like AM-illy. It’s hard to write down the proper [name_m]French[/name_m] pronunciation, and some of these might be just lame efforts of trying to get there. On forvo most of them seem to say some mixture between ah-me-lee and ah-may-lee, but it’s never quite so harsh as the American “ay” sound. It’s very soft.
I’d pronounce Amélie as ah-[name_f]MAY[/name_f]-lee, and [name_f]Amelie[/name_f] is in AM-illy (like [name_f]Emily[/name_f]) - the accent changes pronunciation for me but that might be totally wrong.
The top of bottom options of the poll are the same to me.
I have a family friend who named her daughter this. It’s pronounced Am-eh-lee. Like [name_f]Emily[/name_f], with an A.
The same with me! I will go further and say I pronounce it just as it is in the [name_m]French[/name_m] film with [name_f]Audrey[/name_f] Tautou. [name_m]Ah[/name_m]-MEH (like in the word “Mit”-lee
