We’re expecting baby #4 and considering the name [name_m]Mathias[/name_m]. It’s a family name that seems to round out our sibset - [name_u]Sasha[/name_u], [name_f]Mimi[/name_f] ([name_f]Amelia[/name_f]) & [name_f]Juliet[/name_f] - with something quirky but familiar. But we’re not sure how most people would expect it to be pronounced. Help us out! Thanks!
@bailibsmum I think it depends on where you are honestly, not so much on what letters are or aren’t in it. I have heard it both Mah-[name_m]TYE[/name_m]-us and Mah-THIGH-us even with the H. You can also see it spelled [name_m]Matthias[/name_m], which is a combo of the two spellings you mentioned. It is also pronounced Mah-TEE-us and Mah-[name_u]TAY[/name_u]-us in some places. =]
I live in the States, but [name_m]German[/name_m] is my mother tongue and I live in an overwhelmingly Hispanic region of the country, so I would pronounce it Muh-TEE-us. I have it on my list also, and that is the pronunciation I’d use.
I say it as mah-[name_m]TYE[/name_m]-us, myself. However, my school friend’s little brother’s middle name is [name_m]Mathias[/name_m] and the family uses various pronunciations for it…some say Mah-THIGH-us and others mah-THEE-us. [name_m]Just[/name_m] be consistent, whatever you choose lol.
[name_u]Mat[/name_u]/thias is [me- tye-es] or [ me-tay-es] .The
/h/ is not enunciated. However as @balibsmum says you will hear dialectic variations which include the /h/. Should be like [name_m]French[/name_m] ‘[name_f]Nathalie[/name_f]’ which is [name_f]Natalie[/name_f].
[name_u]Love[/name_u] the name -usually in my sig somewhere.
Thank you guys so much for your responses. However, they confirmed my fear - no one will know how to pronounce it when they see it on paper! Our ancestor’s name was pronounced Mah-thigh-us, which is how we would do it but I’m still not sure…I don’t like confusion.
