How popular do these names feel to you?

[name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] - crazy popular, but most I know are already between 20 and 40. There are lots between 10-20 too, but I don’t know many younger ones. I do find it annoying, but I never liked it much, so that probably plays a part. I don’t mind [name_u]Charlie[/name_u] or [name_f]Lottie[/name_f].

[name_u]Evelyn[/name_u] - this one feels rather unpopular to me. I don’t know many, only a few. Always baffles me that this is a top 10 name.

[name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] - not so many. Lots of Ellies and don’t know how many are [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] on paper, though.

[name_f]Violet[/name_f] - same as [name_u]Evelyn[/name_u] and [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f]. I know a few, but not many.

[name_u]Hazel[/name_u] - same

[name_f]Emilia[/name_f] - loads. Also [name_f]Amelia[/name_f]. They sound the same to me. I find this name annoying, sorry.

[name_f]My[/name_f] guess is that popularity is sometimes hidden behind spelling variants. [name_u]Hazel[/name_u], [name_u]Evelyn[/name_u], [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] and [name_f]Violet[/name_f] were never as common as [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] (at least I don’t think so) and they don’t have popular spelling variants. There are [name_f]Elinor[/name_f] and [name_f]Violette[/name_f], but they are not common at all.

[name_f]My[/name_f] guess is that when you combine spellings for other names, [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f], [name_f]Violet[/name_f], [name_u]Evelyn[/name_u] and [name_u]Hazel[/name_u] all fall in popularity, because names with several spellings surpass them. [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] would go down a bit too, I guess, but it is the only Top 5 name with [name_f]Amelia[/name_f], [name_f]Emilia[/name_f] so still very popular whereas I think none of the others would be in the top 10 if spellings were combined.

I can’t think of all of them right now, but it’s like when back in the 80s/90s/early 2000s names like [name_f]Michaela[/name_f] and [name_f]Caitlin[/name_f] and [name_f]Hailey[/name_f] and [name_u]Lindsay[/name_u] never went that far up by themselves, but combined they would have been super popular.

[name_f]Kaitlyn[/name_f] (the most popular spelling) never made the top 20, but combined with [name_f]Katelyn[/name_f], [name_f]Caitlin[/name_f], [name_f]Kaitlin[/name_f] etc. it would have been #1 some years. [name_u]Lindsay[/name_u] and [name_u]Lindsey[/name_u] combined would have been close to the top 10, by themselves I think they never made the top 25. [name_f]Michaela[/name_f] would have been top 20 at least, [name_f]Hailey[/name_f] too, [name_f]Madeline[/name_f] (Madelyn, [name_f]Madeleine[/name_f], Madilyn) too.

I know a gajillion Charlottes (seriously, like 5 friends in the past year or two) so it’s ultra popular for me. I’ve had at least one friend go with [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f], [name_u]Evelyn[/name_u] and [name_f]Emilia[/name_f].

That’s so true, I hadn’t thought about different spellings making a big impact on actual popularity. I wonder what the top 10 would look like if things were calculated by combining all births with same name-alternate spellings?

Thanks for the opinions, everyone! Overall I think I’m only mildly bothered when it comes to popularity, like I wouldn’t let it stop me from choosing a name, but it’s something to factor in when narrowing down favorites. Mostly, I’m just curious how popular names come across to people!

I’m in the Midwest US, and not around many children as of now. I know an adult [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] who is in her 20’s. I also went to college with a girl who named her three-year-old daughter that. I don’t know any Charlottes but I’m pretty sure my mom has a cousin [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f]. It’s a gorgeous name and [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] nn. [name_u]Charlie[/name_u] is :face_holding_back_tears:!! I also don’t know any Violets, but I LOVE the name, or any Amelias, Amelias, or Evelyns.

This was fun, thank you!

:butterfly::white_heart:

No idea if this is relevant as I am not from the U.S. but [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] is the only one that is popular for me here

I’ve only met 1 adult who was [name_u]Evelyn[/name_u] (spelt like Eveline) and 1 adult [name_f]Emilia[/name_f]. 1 kid named [name_f]Violette[/name_f] and 1 teen named [name_f]Eleonore[/name_f]. (So no Violets or Eleanors but only variants of them)
(Also, I’ve worked with kids so I did have a big exposure to names)

I mostly know people with these names that are around my age. I don’t work with kids a lot but I’ve never seen most of these names on a little kid before. The only ones are [name_f]Amelia[/name_f], the daughter of my mom’s friend, and [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] (nn Charlie) daughter of my mom’s coworker.

For example, in my grade (I’m a high school sophomore) I know an [name_u]Evelyn[/name_u] and an [name_f]Emilia[/name_f]. There is also a [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] in the grade above me.

I only know of Violets, Eleanors, and Hazels in books and movies.

Here in the [name_m]Pacific[/name_m] Northwest USA…

[name_f]Charlotte[/name_f]- does not feel overly popular. I know one through social media

[name_u]Evelyn[/name_u]- I only know one.

[name_f]Eleanor[/name_f]- feels medium popular. There are 2 Nora’s in my son’s preschool class

[name_f]Violet[/name_f]- does not feel popular

[name_u]Hazel[/name_u]- feels very popular. I know two in my community and another couple from social media, and I hear it on the playground a LOT

[name_f]Emilia[/name_f]- I don’t know any, but I know two little Amelia’s and I hear it on the playground a lot
