How popular do these names feel to you?

Curious what other folks think of a few names that I like that are in the top 50 in the U.S. I do run into a fair amount of kids through my work, but most of my friends are child-free and also don’t have a lot of nieces & nephews running around, so I’m not sure my popularity gauge is super reliable compared to people who’re around kids more often. :joy:

How popular do they feel to you? [name_f]Do[/name_f] you know a lot of kids with these names, and is it off-putting?

[name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] - #3
[name_u]Evelyn[/name_u] - #9
[name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] - #16
[name_f]Violet[/name_f] - #20
[name_u]Hazel[/name_u] - #27
[name_f]Emilia[/name_f] - #44, similar name [name_f]Amelia[/name_f] is #4

So my top 50 is completely different then the us popularity charts (state wise)

[name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] and [name_f]Amelia[/name_f] are the only ones I’d consider popular , but I probably don’t know

[name_u]Hazel[/name_u] and [name_f]Violet[/name_f] are the only two that don’t feel crazy popular to me!

I encounter a lot of Charlottes, Eleanors, Amelias/Emilias (and Millies), and Violets lately. I don’t work with children or anything, but just from people I went to school with having kids, social media, out and about and overhear them at the grocery store, etc.

Haven’t encountered an [name_u]Evelyn[/name_u] or [name_u]Hazel[/name_u] at all, though.

definitely [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f], 100%. I know 3 under the age of 5, plus some girls who are “just” [name_u]Charlie[/name_u].

ive met 1 [name_u]Hazel[/name_u], 1 [name_f]Amelia[/name_f], and 1 [name_f]Violet[/name_f] under 5. I also know 1 [name_f]Amelia[/name_f] and 1 [name_f]Violet[/name_f] who are over 5.

ive never met an [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] or [name_f]Emilia[/name_f]. the only [name_u]Evelyn[/name_u] ive ever known is 23.

I’m in the US Midwest, raising 3 young kids, and so we’re around lots of children. This is what I can report from my surroundings:

I know:

2 Charlottes
4 Evelyns (and it feels more popular than it is because we’re also heavily surrounded by Everlys and Evies)
4 Eleanors (same perception as [name_u]Evelyn[/name_u], because of Ellas and Noras)
No Violets!
No Hazels!
1 [name_f]Emilia[/name_f] (and 1 [name_f]Emelia[/name_f] and 2 Amelias)

Hazel and Emilia don’t seem popular here in Oz (though Hazel a top 15 name). Violet and Eleanor seem popular for sure (but not especially popular by stats so must be where I live). Ava/Evie for sure, at least 5-10 years ago, not so much Evelyn. I know Charlotte is a fave here (top three over many years with Isla & Olivia) but I don’t meet any Charlottes (under 25), none in my extended family nor among my kid’s friends or my friends’ kids.

I babysit two girls named [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] in the same city who are witching five months’ each other’s ages. That one I hear a ton!

All these names are rare in my country except:

[name_u]Evelyn[/name_u], 103 this year. I met an [name_u]Evelyn[/name_u] of my age once
[name_f]Charlotte[/name_f], it should be around 300 or something, but I met 3 young girls named [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f]
[name_f]Emilia[/name_f] is in the top 200 but I never met an [name_f]Emilia[/name_f] before

[name_f]Charlotte[/name_f], [name_f]Violet[/name_f], [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] and [name_u]Hazel[/name_u] are what I would consider popular. [name_f]Amelia[/name_f] too.

I would imagine [name_u]Evelyn[/name_u] and [name_f]Emilia[/name_f] to be fairly popular but further down the list.

(Based in Canada)
[name_f]Charlotte[/name_f]- Very popular. I know about 5-6 Charlottes between 12 and 17 yr old. Two go by [name_u]Charlie[/name_u].
[name_u]Evelyn[/name_u]- Sort of popular. I know 1 16 yr old [name_u]Evelyn[/name_u] and one 4 yr old [name_u]Evelyn[/name_u] “Evie”
[name_f]Eleanor[/name_f]- sort of popular. I only know 2 Eleanor’s (11 and 17 yrs) but I’m aware that there are more around
[name_f]Violet[/name_f]- Not very popular. I only know 1 [name_f]Violet[/name_f] age 15
[name_u]Hazel[/name_u]- More popular on much younger kids. I know 1 [name_u]Hazel[/name_u] (8 yrs) and 1 [name_u]Hazel[/name_u] (2 yrs) personally, but I hear of many more through other people
[name_f]Emilia[/name_f]- I know 2 Emilia’s (17 and 5 yrs) and one [name_f]Amelia[/name_f] (16 yrs)

I would say that I would consider these names popular (except maybe Violet) but they are all classic names that don’t “date,” I wouldn’t get as bored of them as by some other popular names. I don’t think I would use them though, because my daughter would very likely be more then one in her class.

I’m in the UK so I’m not sure how useful my analysis is to you. But where I am, [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] and [name_u]Evelyn[/name_u] are very popular (with [name_u]Evelyn[/name_u] particularly, at one point it felt like every other little girl was an [name_f]Eve[/name_f] variant - [name_u]Evelyn[/name_u], [name_f]Evie[/name_f] or Eva). [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] felt like a ‘sleeping’ classic but I think [name_f]Princess[/name_f] [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] exploded it’s popularity again. [name_u]Hazel[/name_u] and [name_f]Emilia[/name_f] don’t feel too popular where I am, though [name_f]Amelia[/name_f] is extremely popular. [name_f]Violet[/name_f] is a funny one - I haven’t heard of too many where I am, but it’s a bit of a [name_u]London[/name_u] hipster option which makes it feel more ubiquitous than it probably is (I’m not in London).

[name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] → popular, met lots of little Charlottes and teenage Charlottes

[name_u]Evelyn[/name_u] → only ever met one, a teen

[name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] → met a number of these, a couple of little ones, more older ones

[name_f]Violet[/name_f] → encountered a number of little Violets

[name_u]Hazel[/name_u] → yet to meet a real life little [name_u]Hazel[/name_u]!

[name_f]Emilia[/name_f] → met maybe two? not too many - but i have known so so so many Amelias

I think [name_f]Violet[/name_f] and [name_f]Amelia[/name_f] are very popular.

I’ll preface this by saying I don’t know too many young kids, though I do know a lot of teens and older kids. So my perception is mostly based on names I hear out and about and among kids who are a little older than you’re probably most curious about, but anyway:

[name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] - Definitely feels trendy right now and common in general, but not overwhelmingly so? I knew it was really popular but it somehow doesn’t feel overly ubiquitous yet

[name_u]Evelyn[/name_u] - I’ve encountered a LOT of Evelyns around my age (I’m 18), though many go by [name_f]Evie[/name_f]. It’s definitely starting to feel a little stale to me especially since it’s been popular for a while

[name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] - [name_f]Pretty[/name_f] much the same thing I said about [name_u]Evelyn[/name_u], but slightly less so

[name_f]Violet[/name_f] - This one probably feels the most trendy out of all the ones on this list, mostly since its rise in popularity seems more sudden. I’d definitely be wary if I wanted to avoid popular names

[name_u]Hazel[/name_u] - This one surprised me a bit, while it does have a sort of modern feel it doesn’t seem overdone to me at all

[name_f]Emilia[/name_f] - [name_f]Amelia[/name_f] seems very popular but this spelling still feels pretty distinctive, I wouldn’t have guessed it ranked that high

[name_f]Charlotte[/name_f], [name_f]Amelia[/name_f], and [name_u]Hazel[/name_u] feel very popular to me. I know several!

I’ve heard a few [name_f]Violet[/name_f] and [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] children, but I wouldn’t view it as popular as those other three.

[name_u]Evelyn[/name_u] I don’t really hear often!

In the UK here so trends might be slightly different, but the only Charlottes and Eleanors I know are teens or adults. I know a couple of ‘just’ Lotties and Ellies in the primary school/preschool age range though.

Likewise, I don’t know any Evelyns but know some Evas and Evies, and Amelias rather than Emilias.

I know one young [name_u]Hazel[/name_u] and two young Violets.

Personally I don’t let popularity bother me if I like a name, if it’s popular its often for good reason. I grew up with a fairly popular name and I didn’t really care too much about having to use my initial sometimes.

[name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] - Definitely feels popular, I know probably 3-5 Charlottes
[name_u]Evelyn[/name_u] - I don’t know any Evelyns so it doesn’t feel popular to me
[name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] - this one is tricky. I think that I know a bunch of Eleanors but they all go by nicknames? So kind of popular but not really [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] level
[name_f]Violet[/name_f] - I can think of a ton of character Violets but now that I think of it I only know 1 irl, so I’m not quite sure.
[name_u]Hazel[/name_u] - It doesn’t feel super popular because I don’t know any.
Emilia/Amelia - I know 1 [name_f]Emilia[/name_f] and 1 [name_f]Amelia[/name_f], so sort of popular?

charlotte - only met like 2 people w this name in my life, so not very popular- i’ve met more charlies for both genders.
evelyn - only met 1, it feels like it should be popular but again i’ve only met one person w that name.
eleanor - don’t believe i’ve met an eleanor - maybe one if i have. mostly just ellie’s & elizabeth’s
violet - doesn’t feel popular, and never met anyone w the name
hazel - again never met anyone w the name
emilia - never met anyone, and also doesn’t feel very popular, although i’ve met a few amelia’s and that name feels popular.

charlotte doesn’t feel too popular, honestly. it’s my middle name, and i currently know two, but i’ve met/heard about two others.

evelyn, i only know two of, they’re 14 and 8. i’ve only met one other and she’d probably be around 12ish now. we thought we heard someone calling for an evelyn that looked about 9ish

eleanor, i’ve only met one i’m pretty sure and she was in her eighties or nineties when she was alive.

violet, i’ve met a couple, age around 11-12 now. it feels kind of popular (i’ve also read a book with main character violet) and if it wasn’t it could’ve been my name. my mom liked it but my dad thought it’d be popular in the coming years so he vetoed immediately.

hazel, i think i’ve only met one? she’d be almost 12 now, i’m pretty sure.

emilia - never met any. i’ve met i think 3 amelias, one is 14, the other two are around 11.
