I really love the name [name_f]Afton[/name_f], but I dont like the association with five nights at Freddy’s (I don’t really want to name my sweet baby after a serial killer you know?)
But I’m not really in the loop when it comes to 5 nights at Freddy’s. So I cant tell how strong the association is / will be.
Is everyone going to immediately think of 5 nights at Freddy’s? Is it more of a niche crowd? [name_m]Or[/name_m] do you think it’s an association that will fade?

I’ve never even heard of it (though I don’t watch horror movies), so many not many people would make that association? Is the [name_f]Afton[/name_f] a main character or minor character?
I think [name_f]Afton[/name_f] is really cute and I don’t think it should be unusable because of a movie.

I am a (admittedly casual) [name_m]Five[/name_m] Nights at Freddy’s game fan who saw the movie when it came out and it took me a second to remember [name_m]William[/name_m] [name_f]Afton[/name_f] when you said the name in connection to FNAF. I think people are far more likely to remember him as the purple guy or spring trap if they think about that aspect of the lore at all.
I also honestly don’t think FNAF has the cultural staying power or hyper popularity to take over an existing name like [name_f]Afton[/name_f]. I’d say it’s a lovely name and you should use it if that’s what your heart desires.

I’ve heard of FNAF, but I don’t know a single name from it. Would never have made the connection.

I think a lot of people here will tell you it’s not that prominent because they’re a little older (not that there’s anything wrong with older folks playing video games, it’s just that the fanbase of this one is younger). Personally, I’m 21 and have friends who are younger than me (18-20) as well as a younger brother who’s 17, and while it could just be the kind of people I hang out with (I think the games also have more of a male & nonbinary fanbase, although I definitely know girls who’ve played it), I’d say most of them know FNAF. I’m not a fan myself, but a lot of people my age and younger grew up watching playthroughs of the games (and still watch them when new games come out) so I’m definitely vaguely familiar with the Afton character. I’m not sure when the association will fade. It definitely will eventually, but the games have been going on for something like 10 years now and they’re still very popular.
All that said, I still think it’s fine? I do think of the character when I hear the name because it’s my only association, but Afton has a neutral on-trend sound and if I met one I’d start associating the name with them instead. Maybe a kid with the name would get some references to the games from other children, but I highly doubt it would be a serious problem!

I’ve heard of it and it had its 15 minutes of fame on TikTok when it came out, but I don’t think its influence is that strong. I know nothing about the plot or characters and don’t think [name_f]Afton[/name_f] would immediately be connected to it in everyone’s minds.

It’s the surname of the main character/family. Who admittedly often isn’t referred to as his name, but its still the only association most people (at least US based) would have with the name.

I’m a teenager and I’ve never heard it. I’ve vaguely heard of FNAF from friends, but where I am (even for males) it’s not much of an influence. I think [name_f]Afton[/name_f] is a nice name!

I’m a 15-year-old who’s been obsessed with [name_m]Five[/name_m] [name_m]Night[/name_m] at Freddy’s for several years, and unfortunately, whenever I hear the name “Afton”, I do think of [name_m]William[/name_m] [name_f]Afton[/name_f], but chances are I’m in the minority, given the responses of the users above. However, I wouldn’t assume badly of either the parent or child if they were named [name_f]Afton[/name_f]- just the opposite. I would assume they’d never heard of FNAF at all. I think [name_f]Afton[/name_f] in a nice gender-neutral name!

I’m familiar with the game and know several people who have played it, but as someone who hasn’t, I did not even know [name_f]Afton[/name_f] was in the game! I think it’s a probably pretty clear divide between people who are into FNAF and know, vs. the people who aren’t and do not. I wouldn’t expect anyone who didn’t play the games or watch the movie to associate [name_f]Afton[/name_f] with FNAF, and I doubt fans would either. I think you’re in the clear!
For what it’s worth, I’ve known an [name_f]Afton[/name_f], who would be in her twenties right now, and LOVED getting to say the name out loud. I think it would go so well with your children’s names as well!

I’ve heard of [name_m]Five[/name_m] Nights at Freddy’s but know nothing about it except that it’s a video game. As such I wouldn’t associate names with it, in the way that I would, say with Game of Thrones or [name_m]Lord[/name_m] of The Rings, despite not having watched/read them.
I can’t however comment on how popular FNAF actually is and if more people would know it in relation to that, but I haven’t heard it mentioned in a while If you have any friends/relatives with/that are tweens or young adults, it might be worth asking among them.
[name_f]Afton[/name_f] is a charming name btw

In my social circle at least (I’m sixteen, fyi) everyone has at least heard of (and often played/watched) FNAF. I would definitely make the connection to [name_m]William[/name_m] [name_f]Afton[/name_f], but I’m sure this association will weaken over time as the game eventually drifts from public consciousness.
Despite the fact I recognise the name, I don’t think that makes the name unusual at all - the name existed way before FNAF. It’s not my personal style, but I like it for other people. You may get one or two comments in a blue moon from a person with a particularly good memory, but nothing too serious I think. If you like it, you should always go for it!
