How popular is Finn really?

We are almost positive we want to name our second son [name_m]Griffin[/name_m] and possibly call him by the nn [name_u]Finn[/name_u] when he is younger but I keep reading how popular [name_u]Finn[/name_u] is but it’s not even in the top 200 yet…[name_m]How[/name_m] can this be? [name_m]Even[/name_m] when you consider all the possible [name_u]Finn[/name_u] nickname sources ([name_m]Finnegan[/name_m], [name_u]Finley[/name_u], etc) they still don’t make up for the discrepancy in my opinion. Am I missing something? Of course if we choose [name_m]Griffin[/name_m] then we don’t have to use [name_u]Finn[/name_u] but I’d like to understand the popularity of the potential nickname before I make a final decision. Anyone else have a clue?

Last year in the US, out of 4 million births:

1639 boys named [name_m]Griffin[/name_m]

And you can bet that they all go by '[name_u]Finn[/name_u]."

Popularity doesn’t matter when you consider how awesome the name is, but since you asked, I’ve only seen the name used once on a real person.

I never met a [name_u]Finn[/name_u] and I like the name better than [name_m]Griffin[/name_m].

Other then [name_u]Finn[/name_u] from Adventure Time (on Cartoon Network), I have never meet a [name_u]Finn[/name_u] in real life. We did have a [name_m]Griffin[/name_m] in our class, but we called him [name_m]Gilford[/name_m], lol.

I’ve never met a [name_u]Finn[/name_u] or [name_m]Griffin[/name_m] in real life, only heard of these names through nameberry.

I know several little Finns, but I think it depends a lot on your area. If you haven’t met one yet than you’re probably fine.

I have only met 1 [name_u]Finn[/name_u] in real life. I have the same question as you though. I want to use [name_m]Franklin[/name_m] nn [name_u]Finn[/name_u] but I don’t want it to be too popular.

It’s hard to grasp how popular a name is based on a number. I wouldn’t worry unless [name_u]Finn[/name_u] is super popular in your world (not online). I have an [name_u]Owen[/name_u] and have never known another before or since! I’ve known one [name_u]Finn[/name_u], one [name_m]Fintan[/name_m], and know one expecting couple planning on using the name [name_u]Finn[/name_u]. I think it is on the rise, but I still love it. [name_m]Griffin[/name_m] nn [name_u]Finn[/name_u] is on my own list!

Thanks so much! There are several Finns in DC where we live now but we plan to move back to the midwest in the near future so I’m hoping it won’t have caught on as much there yet! And worst case, if it gets too popular or doesn’t seem to fit our son we can just call him by his full name [name_m]Griffin[/name_m] which I love anyway!

I have never met a [name_u]Finn[/name_u] in my life so I don’t consider it popular. I judge popularity on the names of people I know and hear when I am in different places. I don’t judge it on how many babies were given that name last year in a certain country or at what number the name is ranked at.

We have a three year old [name_u]Finn[/name_u] and DH and I worried so much about popularity before naming him. I can honestly say we haven’t met another one yet (we live in [name_u]London[/name_u] now but DH is American). I’ve heard a good few Finleys around town but no actual Finns. I’m Irish and it’s always been my favorite name so we just went for it and have no regrets

I’ve only met 2 [name_u]Finn[/name_u]'s. I really prefer [name_m]Griffin[/name_m] in it’s full form.

I think [name_u]Finn[/name_u] is less super-popular than it is extremely on-trend, and it might only [name_m]FEEL[/name_m] like it’s everywhere. I know one two-year-old boy named [name_u]Finley[/name_u], who goes by his full name. Incidentally, his parents meant to call him [name_u]Finn[/name_u] but it didn’t stick. I think you should go with [name_m]Griffin[/name_m], and use [name_u]Finn[/name_u] if you really want to.

I know a [name_m]Griffin[/name_m], age 2. But he goes by [name_m]Griff[/name_m], not [name_u]Finn[/name_u].

We named our little guy [name_u]Finley[/name_u] in [name_u]November[/name_u]. I hadn’t met another [name_u]Finn[/name_u] before naming our boy (although I had seen the numbers on nameberry & the social security website).

[name_f]My[/name_f] pediatrician had never met a [name_u]Finley[/name_u], so I took that as a good sign.

If you use [name_m]Griffin[/name_m]/[name_u]Finn[/name_u], you are likely to meet another, but it’s nothing like [name_m]Jackson[/name_m] (my 2 yr old has 5 [name_m]Jackson[/name_m]'s in his preschool of 40).

And, I can tell you that our little [name_u]Finn[/name_u] fits the name perfectly.

I love [name_m]Griffin[/name_m] for a boy. I’ve only met one, he is 4 but just goes by [name_m]Griffin[/name_m]. Awesome way to get to [name_u]Finn[/name_u] which is such a cool name. I feel like f you were to do just [name_u]Finn[/name_u], you would have more of a problem with all the “popularity”.
