How popular is Lucy in Canada?

Any parents out there in [name_f]Canada[/name_f] have some info/strong opinions on this? I’ve read the stats but you know how it is, hard to actually know if that means a lot or not. Are there tons of them in your kids schools?

I really like [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] (debating [name_f]Lucinda[/name_f] for a long form birth certificate or just keeping it short at [name_f]Lucy[/name_f]).

My hubby loves [name_f]Liliana[/name_f] ([name_f]Lily[/name_f] for everyday use). But i think that’s even more popular.

And new contender is [name_f]Lena[/name_f].

Yes all the short L names are standing out…
Big brother is [name_m]Colin[/name_m].

So hard to pick one! Last time it felt so much easier somehow…although we only decided after he was born but I can’t even remember the other options.

We don’t have national stats, but if you look at the provinces that do publish good stats regularly (BC, [name_f]Alberta[/name_f], [name_m]Quebec[/name_m]), it looks a bit more popular than in the US, a bit less popular than in the UK.

I’ve encountered a few young [name_f]Lucy[/name_f]/Lucies in [name_m]Ontario[/name_m], but I’ve met far, far more little [name_f]Lily[/name_f]/[name_f]Lilia[/name_f]/[name_f]Lillian[/name_f]/[name_f]Lilas[/name_f] and [name_f]Lena[/name_f]/[name_f]Elena[/name_f]/[name_f]Lainey[/name_f]/[name_f]Leni[/name_f]/Laynas.

[name_m]Colin[/name_m] and [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] are fantastic on siblings!

I live in Southwestern [name_m]Ontario[/name_m] and know of several Lucys but all are well over age 5. (Most are friends of my parents, one is the 17 year old sister of an old classmate, and one is a friend of a friend).

I used to work in two schools and a daycare though and never once encountered a [name_f]Lucy[/name_f]. [name_m]Plenty[/name_m] of Charlottes, Avas, Isabelles, Scarletts, and Ellas, but no Lucys!

[name_f]Liliana[/name_f] doesn’t seem popular to me at all - I know a couple of Lilys but no Lillians or Lilianas!

I agree - [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] and [name_m]Colin[/name_m] would make a lovely set! I’d personally stick with just [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] over [name_f]Lucinda[/name_f], as i feel it over complicates things.

So interesting! I would have never thought [name_f]Lena[/name_f] is so popular because it wasn’t on any of the top lists and I’ve never really heard it on the playground. But thanks for the insight! I’m trying to think of names that can travel well and [name_f]Lena[/name_f] seems to fit that maybe best of the 3.

Somehow it feels more like a complete (for lack of a better word) name to me? Maybe because it ends in a? But I still feel a pull towards [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] and I think I’ve always liked it since I was a kid.

Cool, thanks for the insight! Maybe it just feels popular because it’s so familiar, because I don’t know or any little [name_f]Lucy[/name_f]'s on the playground either. But I’ve seen it on some kind of Canadian names list in the top 40 I believe so I thought that meant pretty common.

[name_f]Lucy[/name_f] is a great name. I know a horse and puppy with the name, but no little ones (meanwhile I know 5 little evelyns).

I’ve never met a [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] (I work with children in various areas in toronto) but if you want something similar you could go with [name_f]Lucia[/name_f] Or [name_f]Lucille[/name_f].

Or you can do [name_f]Lilia[/name_f] which is cute. I’ve met a few Lilys but no [name_f]Lillian[/name_f]'s

I live in [name_m]Ontario[/name_m] and I’ve met one [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] (and a dog), several Lilys and quite a few Lenas. [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] seems to be one of those names that’s super popular in theory but you don’t hear in real life too much. I would use it for sure!!

I’m not around young children much so this may not be too helpful, but I’m in [name_m]Ontario[/name_m] and have never met a child named [name_f]Lucy[/name_f]. [name_f]Lily[/name_f]/[name_f]Lilia[/name_f]/variants of it seem to be pretty popular amongst young children though, and there are so many of that family of names that it can feel more popular. I’ve never met a [name_f]Lena[/name_f] of any age myself.

If you like short L names, what about [name_f]Lux[/name_f], [name_f]Lyra[/name_f], or [name_f]Luna[/name_f] (supposedly growing in popularity but I haven’t met any)?

[name_f]Lucy[/name_f] is my fave of the three. I know one baby [name_f]Lucie[/name_f], a few [name_f]Lily[/name_f]/[name_f]Liliana[/name_f] and no [name_f]Lena[/name_f].

Sweet! That’s kind of what I was hoping for. Seems popular but isn’t really.

Trying to imagine it at every age and any type of occupation/success level and I feel like it’s pretty versitile. I wish that I just loved one of the longer forms, and although I do like some of them more than others, they don’t feel really natural when I say them out loud.

Anyhoo, thanks for the insights! Maybe short and sweet is just the way to go!

Now, what about double middle names? Lol is that a thing? Does the second middle even count for anything? It doesn’t end up on paperwork in [name_f]Canada[/name_f], does it?
