So, [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] is currently at #40 in the US, and I see a ton of comments about how popular it is, but I was just thinking how weird it was that I don’t hear it much in real life, and was wondering if anyone else feels the same way? I know that a lot of names with a similar sound and style are big, but I only seem to hear it slightly more than I did a few years ago, and I haven’t met any young kids with the name (though I don’t interact much with young kids in general).
Anyway, for those of you who have/work with kids, how trendy does it actually feel to you? If you met a little [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] would you think, “ugh, not another one”, or is it just like any other semi-common name you wouldn’t think much of? [name_f]Do[/name_f] you think in ten years it’ll be seen as SO 2020s? It’s probably also complicated by the fact that it’s never completely gone out of style, and it could just depend on the region.
I’m in the southern US and I’ve only ever known 1 [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] personally – a teenager. I don’t think [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] feels trendy at all, instead it’s one of those names that is timeless, semi-common, and always relevant, so I definitely wouldn’t associate it with any particular time period.
Same as previous poster, I’m in the same location and I’ve only known 1 [name_f]Lucy[/name_f], also a teenager. I love the name [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] and it definitely doesn’t feel super popular. I do see it better on, perhaps, a younger child; it just feels like that vibe for me, but I don’t associate the name with any age or time really.
I know quite a few young Lucys, but it’s also #26 in my state. It feels popular and definitely trending, but I wouldn’t say it’s one I’m tired of hearing yet. It’s (recently) been in the top 100 nationally since 2010, so I don’t know that it will feel particular dated to the 2020s. I think it’s trajectory might end up feeling something like [name_f]Laura[/name_f] or [name_f]Julia[/name_f]. [name_m]Classic[/name_m], but definitely had a “time to shine”.
And I’m coincidently also in the southern US. Sorry I’m not adding much geographical variation, ha!
I’m [name_f]Lucy[/name_f], and I know two other Lucys (one adult, one kid), but I don’t think it’s especially overused or anything. I meet/hear of a lot more little girls with invented or surname names in my area (smallish town, Midwest US) than I hear names like [name_f]Lucy[/name_f].
[name_f]Lucy[/name_f] has always been in the top 1000, so I don’t think it could be forever tied to any one decade.
I’m also in the southern US and have known many Lucys. While they’re all young children to mid twenties, I still think of it as a sweet and classic name! I’ve known more than ten personally and still don’t get tired of hearing [name_f]Lucy[/name_f].
[name_f]Lucy[/name_f] is one of those perennial names that always been well-used, but so incredibly prolific that if you throw a rock in any direction at a playground, you’ll find a [name_f]Lucy[/name_f]. To me, it’s more like, everyone knows or has met at least one or two, but no one knows fifteen of them!
It’s definitely not trendy and I don’t think it will ever be tied to any decade, sort of like [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f].
As someone who works with kids (well, teens atm but I have worked with younger kids), I will say this:
‘Real life’ popularity really depends on the area you live in - a name might be in the Top 10 but you never encounter it, but a instead have multiple kids called something rarer and more obscure. This year, I would have expected multiple Jessicas, Megans and Rubys based on the Top 20 of that year, but instead, I had multiple Abbishas, Mishas and Honeys so it’s hard to predict. I guess my advice would be to check how popular it is in your state if you can?
Looking at recent #40 names, I’ve often had one kid called that in the class/year group/session but not loads - not in a ‘oh, another one’ kind of way
So back to [name_f]Lucy[/name_f]! It’s less popular where I am (the UK) to where you are, but I wouldn’t consider it a ‘trendy’ name. I know a number of Lucys (not an excess or abundance of them) of varying ages - from an adult work colleague, to a kid under 10, to my young adult cousins, so it doesn’t strike me as ‘so 2020s’ in anyway. It’s more classic and better established, with a number of historical and literary ties that stop it feeling bound to one time?
And if it helps, I do love [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] and it would be on my list (somewhere) if my aunt hadn’t used it first!
I’m in [name_f]Canada[/name_f] and I know one 7year old [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] and one 14 year old [name_f]Lucie[/name_f] (this spelling.) That’s it, although I’m sure there are many more out there.
I think [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] is really sweet despite popularity- at this point she’s more on the timeless classic side then the trendy one.
I don’t think I’ve known any? I did know a [name_f]Luz[/name_f] growing up who went by [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] as a nickname, and I had a car I called [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] lol, but I don’t know that I’ve known a just [name_f]Lucy[/name_f], or something [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] is typically a nn for (like [name_f]Lucia[/name_f] or Lucille).
I agree that it will probably always feel familiar but never be too dated?
i’m in aus and i do know a fair few. two babies, a four year old, five teenagers (one is lucie) and three adults (one is luci), but i still wouldn’t call it a trendy name. i still love it and think it is very sweet, seeing that it is on the popular side!
lucy would be near the top of my list if i wasn’t so close with some of them!
I’m in [name_f]California[/name_f] and I know several Lucy’s (12 and under), but with it’s history of usage, I don’t think of it as particularly trendy
I’d be quite surprised to meet a young [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] as most that I know are in their 20s or 30s (a few teenagers too, I suppose). Unfortunately I now have negative connotations of the name, due to [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] Letby, but this would probably be more of an issue in the UK than the US, if at all, because it is still a relatively popular name (within the top 100).
I feel exactly the same! Maybe because it’s ranked in the #80s in my state? (I’m in the southwest.) I’ve only ever met one [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] (preschooler).
[name_f]Lucy[/name_f] is a classic. I am in the UK. It is relatively popular here but I have only met two Lucys. One is a work colleague, the other was a girl at school. I work in schools and have done for almost 30 years (giving my age away here!) and in all that time never came across a [name_f]Lucy[/name_f].
It’s a beautiful name and absolutely timeless.
