How popular is Sophia/Sofia really? How many do you know?

I love this name, always have, but with it being the #1 name I’m afraid my little girl will me 1 of 6 in a class room in a few years… The SSA says about 1 in 100 were given the name in 2011.
I’ve heard of a few Sofiane’s (I’m an ex ballerina, and I love Sofiane Sylve) and another Sophienne. I like Annasophia (like the child actress) but think its a mouthful.
Anyways, how many do you know of? [name]How[/name] popular is a name really, even if #1 on the SSA?

Personally I’ve known one [name]Sophia[/name] and she had one other [name]Sophia[/name] in her grade, but not in her class. As for the popularity overall thing, look at it this way. Most schools (unless they’re unusually large or small) have three classes per grade. Average class size is between 20 and 25 students. So you’re looking at your child being one out of 75 kids in her grade. So could there be another [name]Sophia[/name] in her grade? Possibly, but odds are they won’t be in the same class. [name]Even[/name] if there was another [name]Sophia[/name] in her class, there’s no way that there would be six.

Whether or not your [name]Sophia[/name] will run into a lot of other Sophias in school is very hard to predict. I’ve worked in several different schools (in a couple different cities) and really, it comes down to what’s popular in your area. I’ve never run into a child named [name]Isabella[/name], despite that being the number on name for years but I have come across lots of children named [name]Ella[/name] and [name]Liliana[/name]. I also had a class one year with two boys named [name]Osvaldo[/name], which isn’t a common name at all, even in the Hispanic community. So really, you just never know.

I would say, if you love [name]Sophia[/name] (and have for years) you should use it and not worry about what other people are naming their kids. Better to use a name you love then to forsake it for a less popular name that you just like.

I think it depends on your area. In some areas [name]Sophia[/name] has been the most common name for many years, and there is a very good chance your daughter would run across several in her life time. In other areas, it might not even be in the top 10.

In real life, I know one. And she doesn’t even live in the same country as me, lol. Then again, I know a lot of kids with names in the top 100, but very few with names in the top 10. I haven’t even heard of any Sophias/Sofias in passing, like at the park or grocery store or at the Taco [name]Bell[/name] where I work…

know several, and hear the name ALL the time

I’ve only known one sophia in my life… and that was in the early 90s. I don’t know any little ones today!

I have never met a [name]Sophia[/name] or a [name]Sophie[/name] or anyone with a similar name, and I don’t know of anyone planning on naming their child [name]Sophia[/name]. I’m sure it’s very popular somewhere in [name]America[/name], but not around here! I do however know two baby girls named [name]Andie[/name], a baby girl named [name]Charlie[/name], and a baby named [name]Samantha[/name] nn [name]Sam[/name]. Lol!

I don’t know any. Practically all my friends are having babies but not a single little [name]Sophia[/name] yet.

I have never met a [name]Sophie[/name] or [name]Sophia[/name] as of yet. But I think going 21 years without meeting one is pretty good. It really depends where you live.

Yay, another former ballerina!
I teach ballet a bit now, and out of maybe 100 children in my summer classes, I have 2 Sophias, 1 [name]Sofia[/name], and 1 [name]Sophie[/name]. That seems like kind of a lot, but I think I have more Bellas and more Emmas.

[name]Ive[/name] only heard of the one Sofiane. That could be a lovely way to a less common name that also honors your background in dance.

I know two [name]Sophie[/name]'s, both with [name]Sophie[/name] as a full name. There’s also a mom on tumblr that I follow and her daughter’s name is [name]Sophia[/name]. Overall though, I think (like others have said) that name popularity depends on your area. If you love it, don’t worry! It’s not the end of the world if your daughter has to be [name]Sophia[/name] M. or whatever your last name initial is for a year.

I’ve heard that the most popular names are becoming less and less common (if that makes sense) because people are choosing from a wider variety of names. [name]Even[/name] though [name]Sofia[/name]/[name]Sophia[/name] is super common, it won’t be like the most common names were when we were kids. I’m totally making these numbers up, but it used to be something like 50% of names came from the top 20, and now only 10% of names come from the top 20. So obviously, names used to be repeated more often. A little [name]Sophie[/name] will definitely run into some other girls with her name, but I doubt there will be 8 of them in her class.

I’ve met 3 in my life but only know two now. The first one was an old school friend of mine who spelt it [name]Sophia[/name]. The other two spell it [name]Sofia[/name], one is about 14 & my cousins daughter, the other is 5 and in my daughters class.

I know about 6 [name]Sophia[/name]/[name]Sofia[/name]/[name]Zofia[/name]/[name]Sofie[/name]/[name]Sophie[/name]'s and around 8 girls who have one of those names as their middle name. Sounds a bit extreme, but it still is a nice name. You should probably also consider the fact that there’s a lot of [name]Sophie[/name]'s too, because people will probably get [name]Sophie[/name] and [name]Sophia[/name] mixed up as well. Especially teachers who might have a class with 5 [name]Sophia[/name]'s and 5 [name]Sophie[/name]'s will definitely get them all mixed up.

I think I met a little [name]Sophia[/name]–a classmate of my baby sister’s. I mostly see it on TV, though–[name]Callie[/name] and [name]Mark[/name]'s baby on [name]Grey[/name]'s Anatomy, for instance. (That probably assisted the recent popularity.)

I’ve never met a [name]Sophia[/name] in real life, but I know a woman whose two-year-old daughter is named [name]Sophia[/name]/[name]Sofia[/name] (not sure of spelling. Once I was at the mall and heard a mother call her daughter (who was about four years old) [name]Sophia[/name]/[name]Sofia[/name]. I know a [name]Sophie[/name] who is university age (and the only one I’m listing here who I personally know). My second cousin in [name]England[/name], about six years old, is [name]Sophie[/name], and I met a woman in Hong Kong named [name]Sophie[/name] (who’s around sixty). Whew, that’s a lot more than I thought I knew!

I personally do not know any, but in my state as of 2011 [name]Sophia[/name] and [name]Sofia[/name] are in the top 10 of names for girls, [name]Sophia[/name] being #1. I have never heard of a sofiane before.

I only know one [name]Sophia[/name], and she’s my 14-year-old cousin. We live in the Northeast US.

[name]Sophia[/name] is not as popular as you think. There will certainly not be 8 in one classroom. If you combine [name]Sophia[/name] and [name]Sofia[/name], you find there were 28,980 born in 2011. There are surely other bad spellings that add to that number, but let’s pretend there aren’t. Assuming all of the Sophias and Sofias are distributed evenly amongst all 50 states, there are approximately 580 per state. Now divide 580 by the number of schools. Still think there will be 8 in one classroom?

My name is [name]Emily[/name], I was born in the 90s, and occasionally there will be one other girl in my class who shares my name. There are less than 20 Emilys at my high school.

I’m in Australia, so not sure if this is relevant to you or not, but I went to school with a [name]Sophie[/name] (I finished HS in the early 2000’s), my cousin is engaged to a [name]Sophie[/name] (in her mid-twenties) and a colleague had a baby a year ago and named her [name]Sofia[/name]. Wow, didn’t think there were that many! But I know just as many [name]Renee[/name]'s and [name]Erin[/name]'s, so I think it’s just one of those names that are softly popular all the time.
