I am not from an English speaking country and I never heard an Eleanor before so no idea. Please explain me like I am five! Since I am not that familiar with pronounciations of English names, I always said it similar to Leonor. (eh-leh-AH-nor, basically)
Thank you, fantastic English speakers of Nameberry for helping me out!
In my American accent I say it like Ella-nor (EH-luh-nor) or Ellen-or (EH-lihn-or) but the emphasis on the first syllable is pretty subtle.
The first time I heard it pronounced with the “nurr” sound at the end was by [name_u]Michael[/name_u] in The Good Place and I was so confused But that is a “real” pronunciation as well in [name_f]English[/name_f].
i have an english accent !! for me it’s EL-uh-nor formally and EL-uh-nuh if i’m speaking quickly. it absolutely can get mixed up with elena, but i don’t have a set pronunciation for elena. instinct says uh-LEN-uh, people around me say uh-LAY-nuh, and actual girls called elena i know say uh-LEE-nuh and EL-uh-nuh (just like fast eleanor). so generally it’s confusing - if i met an “el-uh-nuh” irl i wouldn’t know if she was eleanor or elena.
In [name_f]Italy[/name_f] EH-leh-nah (EH-luh-nah with an [name_f]English[/name_f] accent…) is Elena’s default pronounciation so I got a bit confused haha. I think I will use the American prn to not get it confused :))
If I pronounced it with my default pronunciation, which is similar to [name_f]Leonor[/name_f] (Eh-leh-ah-nohr) would it be understood or? I think the American pronunciation is the easiest for me then. Thank you!,
this is my middle name yay <3 look at the beatles song eleanor rigby bc that’s how i was taught to say it, but i also like it with a more pronounced nor so it rhymes with more it’s so cute either way
