[name_m]Hi[/name_m] everyone,
As you know, I really love the name [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f], but I don’t like [name_f]Liz[/name_f]. [name_f]Libby[/name_f] is alright, [name_f]Lizzie[/name_f] is meh, and [name_f]Lily[/name_f] is probably too much of a stretch for the real world.
I used to really love [name_f]Beth[/name_f] as a nickname for [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f], and also loved [name_f]Bethany[/name_f].
But then I met a really horrible person called [name_f]Beth[/name_f], not for [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f], and that totally ruined my association with the name.
How do I undo a bad association?
I can see all the reasons I used to love this name.
Thank you!
Possibly finding some positive associations to balance it out? That way you have something else besides that person come to mind when you hear it. But in my experience it mostly just takes time

well, the name [name_f]Beth[/name_f] always makes me think of [name_f]Bethany[/name_f] [name_m]Hamilton[/name_m] who is one of my biggest inspirations, that probably doesn’t help, but look her up, she’s really inspiring and might make you love [name_f]Beth[/name_f] again.
I guess you can distinguish as Bully [name_f]Beth[/name_f] wasn’t [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] and your use of [name_f]Beth[/name_f] will still always be as a nickname - ie your child’s identity will be mainly associated with [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f]. Then just finding and talking to/about other Beths! And maybe a cleansing ceremony, not sure. I see [name_f]Beth[/name_f] as a sweet, reliable, bookish and honest name.
Meanwhile, I knew a “Lil” growing up who was an [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f], which I thought was so romantic (before rappers etc). I also like [name_f]Betty[/name_f] (but it’s obviously more of a hip, retro name). I don’t see [name_f]Lily[/name_f] as too far from [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] but I get the reservation. (I don’t like [name_f]Liz[/name_f], [name_f]Lizzy[/name_f] - or [name_f]Ellie[/name_f] for Elizabeth.)
Yeah I’ve been working on cleansing the association. [name_f]Beth[/name_f] from little women and [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] “Beth” [name_m]Thatcher[/name_m] from the companion book series of WCTH to the TV show certainly help.
Oh also this [name_f]Bethany[/name_f] looks nothing like a [name_f]Beth[/name_f] at all, so I’ve sorta unofficially renamed her. And now the nickname is sorta able to be used!
It was my favourite name before, so I don’t see how it can’t be again!
Also thanks for the name vibes.
If it helps, I have known some Beth’s/Bethany’s that were really lovely.

I’ve know an Elizabeth ‘Lily’ who wore it well
also an Elizabeth ‘Billie’, so I think it could work.
One way to undo a bad association is to make a new one - look into books/shows with characters called Beth - that might be an easy place to start. Or, see if there are any writers, youtubers, artists, singers, musicians, youtubers etc who are called Beth who you could watch/read/listen to, to see if that helps shake the association.
Alternatively, making Elizabeth ‘Beth’ combos, making moodboards, aesthetics etc - to make the name Beth your own.
Or, look at the statistics - the popularity of Beth over the years, how many Beths there must be, who aren’t the one association.

Expose yourself to more Beth’s. The only one I can think of right now is [name_f]Beth[/name_f] [name_m]Harmon[/name_m], the main character of the Netflix show The Queen’s [name_m]Gambit[/name_m] who tends to be well liked and is played by the charismatic [name_f]Anya[/name_f] [name_u]Taylor[/name_u] [name_f]Joy[/name_f].
