I love the nickname [name_f]Indie[/name_f], but I don’t like any of the names that lead to it.
[name_u]Indiana[/name_u] could be cute on the right kid, but I am not fond of state names, have no connection to [name_u]Indiana[/name_u], and it reminds me of [name_u]Indiana[/name_u] [name_m]Jones[/name_m], who I like, but not enough to name a kid after.
[name_f]India[/name_f] I actually love, but wouldn’t use because some people find it offensive to use.
[name_f]Indira[/name_f] is the commonly-suggested alternative to [name_f]India[/name_f], but I don’t like the sound or the way it looks.
[name_u]Indigo[/name_u] could be cool on the right kid, so I’m willing to keep it in the maybe list, but I would prefer something less wordy
Have [name_f]Indy[/name_f] as a nn for Inara- which is an Arabic name meaning shining. I saw it on the show Firefly and fell in love. There’s also Inaya which is also an Arabic name and means kindness/Grace.
I guess it could work for…
[name_f]Lorinda[/name_f]
[name_f]Linda[/name_f]/[name_f]Lindy[/name_f]
[name_f]Rosalind[/name_f]
[name_f]Melinda[/name_f]/[name_f]Mindy[/name_f]
[name_f]Belinda[/name_f]
[name_f]Jacinda[/name_f]
[name_u]Lindsay[/name_u]/[name_u]Lindsey[/name_u]
I know a little girl name [name_f]Indie[/name_f] not short for anything.
I really like it as a nn for Inara, but my husband didn’t like that as much as [name_f]Indira[/name_f].
I would use [name_f]India[/name_f] - I really think its unlikely to offend anyone [name_m]IRL[/name_m]. I would have used it if I could have gotten my picky hubby on board with it.
I’m surprised [name_u]Linden[/name_u] hasn’t been mentioned yet. A friend of mine named her daughter [name_u]Linden[/name_u] planning on calling her [name_f]Indie[/name_f] but once she was born, the nickname [name_f]Linnie[/name_f] stuck.
Annalind
[name_f]Ireland[/name_f]
[name_f]Cynthia[/name_f] ( if [name_f]Cindy[/name_f] is a nn, I don’t see why [name_f]Indy[/name_f] or indie couldn’t be used )
Jaylind (instead of [name_u]Jaylen[/name_u])
Personally I adore [name_f]Indie[/name_f] as a stand alone. I have [name_f]Indie[/name_f] [name_f]Rose[/name_f], a non-hyphenated double barrel name, on my short list.
