I would love to honor my dad in naming our next child. If it is a girl though, I am having a hard time coming up with an appropriate honor name from [name_m]Gregory[/name_m]. This name would most likely be used in the middle spot. We don’t have a first name picked at this time, but some of our favorites are [name_f]Adelaide[/name_f], Alarice, [name_f]Ingrid[/name_f], [name_f]Isolde[/name_f], [name_f]Lavinia[/name_f], [name_f]Vivienne[/name_f], and [name_f]Wilhelmina[/name_f].
I’ve come up with a few:
[name_f]Greer[/name_f]/[name_f]Grier[/name_f] (to me the most obvious, since it’s an actual form of the scottish [name_m]Gregor[/name_m]. [name_m]Just[/name_m] not sure I like the sound of it.)
[name_f]Gregoria[/name_f] or [name_f]Greer[/name_f] would be the most authentic choices to honour a [name_m]Gregory[/name_m] but I find them both unattractive and harsh. From your options, I like [name_f]Greta[/name_f] the best and I think [name_f]Rosamund[/name_f], [name_f]Elowen[/name_f] and [name_f]Greta[/name_f] would be lovely together. I love [name_f]Grace[/name_f] too but the poor girl may feel a bit bland next to her more unusually named sisters. What’s your dad’s middle name? Is your maiden name usable? Does your father have any hobbies, does he have a favourite author or book character, or admire any famous people in history? Some cultures use the “initial” of the person to honour them so other “G” names could work.
[name_f]Gabriella[/name_f]
[name_f]Galilea[/name_f]
[name_f]Gaia[/name_f]
[name_f]Gaetana[/name_f]
[name_f]Galiana[/name_f]
[name_f]Galilee[/name_f]
[name_f]Gardenia[/name_f]
[name_f]Garland[/name_f]
[name_f]Garnet[/name_f]
[name_f]Gaynor[/name_f]/[name_f]Gaenor[/name_f]
[name_f]Gelsomina[/name_f]
[name_f]Gemma[/name_f]
[name_f]Geneva[/name_f]/[name_f]Genevieve[/name_f]/[name_f]Guinevere[/name_f]
Genista
[name_f]Georgia[/name_f]/[name_f]Georgiana[/name_f]/[name_f]Georgina[/name_f]
[name_f]Geraldine[/name_f]
[name_u]Germaine[/name_u]
[name_f]Ghislaine[/name_f]
[name_f]Ginette[/name_f]
[name_f]Gilda[/name_f]
[name_f]Gloria[/name_f] - this one is close to [name_m]Gregory[/name_m].
[name_f]Giselle[/name_f]
[name_f]Giulia[/name_f]/[name_f]Giulietta[/name_f]
[name_f]Glynis[/name_f]
[name_f]Grainne[/name_f]/[name_f]Grania[/name_f]
[name_f]Gwendolyn[/name_f]
[name_f]Gwyneth[/name_f]
[name_f]Griselda[/name_f]
You could always choose a name with the same meaning. [name_m]Gregory[/name_m] (according to nameberry) means “Vigilant”. “A Watchman”.
So names that might work with that meaning (or similar meaning)
[name_u]Casey[/name_u]
[name_f]Bernadette[/name_f]
[name_f]Valencia[/name_f]
[name_f]Rita[/name_f]
[name_f]Greer[/name_f] (which is on your list and means “watchful”)
Or in the similar vein as giving her a “[name_f]May[/name_f]” related name, you could give her a name that relates to his favourite animal, food, hobby etc.
[name_u]Love[/name_u] [name_f]Greer[/name_f] and [name_f]Gregoria[/name_f] is stunning. It sounds regal and there’s nn potential ([name_f]Greer[/name_f], [name_u]Grey[/name_u], [name_f]Ria[/name_f], [name_f]Gia[/name_f]). I also like miloowen’s suggestion of Graig
[name_f]Greer[/name_f] and [name_f]Greta[/name_f] are beautiful. [name_f]Gregoria[/name_f] is my favourite, it’s so unusual and striking. It seems to me like the name a girl from an aristocratic background might have had during the Victorian times.
Have you thought about honouring your father by letting him choose the baby’s name?
[name_m]How[/name_m] about [name_f]Glory[/name_f] or [name_f]Gloria[/name_f]?
greGORY. [name_m]Add[/name_m] an L and make it [name_f]Glory[/name_f]. [name_f]Gloria[/name_f] also work.
[name_f]Gretchen[/name_f] and [name_f]Greta[/name_f] both start with GRE same as [name_m]Gregory[/name_m]. Or did your dad have a Middle name you could use? Oops, just saw it is [name_u]Neal[/name_u].
[name_f]Nell[/name_f], [name_f]Penelope[/name_f], [name_f]Nellie[/name_f], [name_f]Noelle[/name_f], [name_f]Noella[/name_f], [name_f]Noelia[/name_f].
Or you could use the initials G N? That might be slightly more special than just G or just N, but would still allow you to pick a name you love?
Or, your father fell in love with your mother, so what if you used one of her names? Or your father named you, so what if you used your name? Or did your father have a favourite hobby or sport? Maybe you could pick a name of a celebrity from that area?
There’s also Grégorie, which is the [name_m]French[/name_m] feminine form of Gregoire (=[name_m]Gregory[/name_m]). Pronounced greh-gaw-[name_f]REE[/name_f].
And I actually think [name_f]Gregoria[/name_f] is quite pretty? I think it would make a cool middle name, especially paired with with a light, sweet first: something like [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] [name_f]Gregoria[/name_f], [name_f]Eve[/name_f] [name_f]Gregoria[/name_f], [name_f]Clementine[/name_f] [name_f]Gregoria[/name_f]…
The only direct variations of the name are [name_f]Greer[/name_f] and Goretti (a [name_m]Saint[/name_m]'s name). I suppose something like Grega could work, too?
[name_f]My[/name_f] dad’s name is [name_m]Gregory[/name_m] too, so for a while I entertained the idea of [name_f]Gregoria[/name_f] nn Greya. However, my dad said he doesn’t like it and would prefer [name_f]Portia[/name_f]. lol
@rollo - I think [name_f]Vivienne[/name_f] [name_f]Greer[/name_f] is an amazing combo! [name_m]Just[/name_m] the balance that [name_f]Greer[/name_f] needs, thanks! @princessariel - Great thought about his picking out the name. Actually when we were coming up with names for our second girl, his favorites were [name_f]Elsa[/name_f], [name_f]Esther[/name_f], and [name_f]Greta[/name_f]. So double points for [name_f]Greta[/name_f]! [name_f]Elsa[/name_f] is probably too close to [name_f]Elowen[/name_f], but I’ve always had a soft spot for [name_f]Esther[/name_f] too. @waverly123 - myself, my mother, and hubby’s mother are all honored through our first daughter. I like the initials idea, but I find they aren’t the easiest initials to work with. I’ve thought about other ways to honor him, like the name [name_u]Juniper[/name_u] for St. [name_u]Juniper[/name_u] the saint of comedy because he is always making us laugh. [name_f]Happy[/name_f] names like [name_f]Lark[/name_f], [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f], [name_f]Beatrix[/name_f], [name_f]Blythe[/name_f], [name_f]Felicity[/name_f], [name_f]Amabel[/name_f], [name_f]Mabel[/name_f], [name_f]Gwyneth[/name_f], etc.
Thanks to everyone else for their input, more suggestions and opinions are welcome!
[name_m]Just[/name_m] a suggestion…what do you think about just giving her the middle name [name_m]Gregory[/name_m]? It has such special meaning to you and she would be proud of what the name symbolizes. We our considering giving out girl my maiden name for her middle name. I like the idea of the middle name having symbolism.
I know a [name_m]Gregor[/name_m]… she is pretty, stylish, and fun.
What about [name_m]Gregor[/name_m] [name_f]Annella[/name_f]? (or [name_m]Gregor[/name_m] Anella?)
I also really like previous posters suggestion of [name_f]Gregoria[/name_f] at a middle… [name_f]Eve[/name_f] [name_f]Gregoria[/name_f] is stunning.
ETA: Although, just now it made me think of Eva Longoria.
