How to Honor Granddad?

I’m trying to come to terms with not being able to use [name_m]Charleston[/name_m] as a way to honor all the men named [name_m]Charles[/name_m] in my life. Specifically, my dad. [name_f]My[/name_f] last name sounds like “mantis” and [name_m]Charleston[/name_m] “Mantis” is just way too close to [name_m]Charles[/name_m] [name_m]Manson[/name_m]. :stuck_out_tongue:

So what are some other ways I could honor [name_m]Charles[/name_m] [name_m]Elton[/name_m]? I don’t like the sound of my maiden name even though it’s used as a given name, so that’s out. I like [name_m]Elton[/name_m], but everyone only associates it with Sir [name_m]Elton[/name_m]. I’m not a fan of [name_m]Carl[/name_m] or really any other forms of [name_m]Charles[/name_m] besides [name_m]Charleston[/name_m]. I’ve also considered trying to create the first and middle initials C.W. since Dad’s last name starts with W. I do like the idea of using [name_m]Farmer[/name_m] as a middle name since Dad is a 4th generation farmer, but I can’t seem to find a first name I like with [name_m]Farmer[/name_m]. Help!!!

Honoring [name_m]Charles[/name_m] [name_m]Elton[/name_m], middle name could be [name_m]Farmer[/name_m]:

The name [name_m]George[/name_m] means farmer, so his middle could be [name_m]George[/name_m], or [name_m]Bauer[/name_m], which also means farmer.

[name_f]Do[/name_f] you really dislike [name_m]Carlson[/name_m] or [name_m]Carlton[/name_m], with a nickname like [name_u]Tony[/name_u] or [name_u]Sonny[/name_u]?

I am thinking that any Ch name could work. [name_u]Channing[/name_u], [name_u]Chandler[/name_u], Or maybe:

[name_m]Harlen[/name_m], [name_u]Ellison[/name_u] ( honoring his middle ), [name_u]Alton[/name_u], [name_u]Carden[/name_u], [name_m]Chasen[/name_m], Charter

I understand your problem but I am not a fan
Of convoluted ways to honour. The only real way to honour a [name_m]Charles[/name_m] is by using the name [name_m]Charles[/name_m], in my opinion. [name_m]How[/name_m] about [name_m]Charles[/name_m] in the middle? Or [name_m]Elton[/name_m]?
[name_u]Sullivan[/name_u] [name_m]Elton[/name_m] or [name_m]Harrison[/name_m] [name_m]Charles[/name_m]? [name_m]Both[/name_m] are lovely.
I wouldnt worry about the [name_m]Charles[/name_m] [name_m]Manson[/name_m] thing. He is not somone who will be remebered by your sons generation.

Oooooh, I like the idea of [name_m]Bauer[/name_m]! I like [name_u]Alton[/name_u] too. And maybe [name_m]Eldon[/name_m]? I’m not sure about [name_m]Carlson[/name_m]. I’m going to ponder that one some more.

[name_m]Eldon[/name_m] is certainly a solid possibility. I actually like [name_m]Elton[/name_m] or [name_u]Ellis[/name_u] better. Any name that starts with [name_f]El[/name_f], maybe throw and N in there, should work.

Or maybe find names I like together that create the initials C.E.? That’s what my mom did with my name to honor my dad. [name_f]My[/name_f] name isn’t connected to his in any other way, but I’ve always enjoyed sharing that little tidbit with him. I still really like [name_m]Bauer[/name_m] too though. I think I’ll follow those two thoughts and see which I like better. Thanks for your help, ashleyjuliette!

You are right, shared initials are a sweet way to have a connection. I think I am rather traditional when it comes to honouring

[name_m]Conrad[/name_m] [name_m]Bauer[/name_m] and [name_m]Harrison[/name_m] [name_m]Bauer[/name_m] are handsome names.

[name_u]Chase[/name_u] is a common nickname for [name_m]Charles[/name_m], so you could use that instead.

but do you not like [name_m]Charles[/name_m] itself?

I do like [name_m]Charles[/name_m]. I just think [name_m]Charles[/name_m] “Mantis” is too close to [name_m]Charles[/name_m] [name_m]Manson[/name_m]. And yes, there’s the possibility that my child’s generation won’t know who [name_m]Charles[/name_m] [name_m]Manson[/name_m] is, but there’s also the possibility that someone might come along and decide to make a movie based on what he did. I’d rather that connection not be there.

I liked [name_m]Charleston[/name_m] because both of my children’s names end with N and mine and my husband’s names ends with N. With a singleton, I’d prefer to use another first name that ends with N. If I have twins someday (which is very possible since they run in my family), then I’m willing to look at other first name options outside of the ends with N realm.

[name_m]Harrison[/name_m] [name_m]Bauer[/name_m] does sound good.
