We are expecting boy #2 (yay!) in [name]January[/name] and [name]Enoch[/name] is a name that my husband and I both like. Our first son is named [name]Noah[/name] and my favorite part about the two names is that those men in the Bible were both said to have walked with God. I also prefer 2 syllable first names, from the Bible, that are not wildly popular (obviously I didn’t realize how popular [name]Noah[/name] would become).
Anyway - we are not sure the correct way to pronounce it! EE-knock is what I always thought, but then I heard EE-nuck. Then I have a friend who says it is actually more like EE-noke (like coke), but he is comparing the Hebrew name to what we have Anglicized it into…
Any ideas? I knew a guy named [name]Enoch[/name] who went by EE-knock but that is my only real life point of reference. Thanks!!!
I’ve always heard it as ee-knock, too. Good luck! [name]Love[/name] your naming process! Ours was very similar and we ended up with [name]Titus[/name].
I pronounce it EE-nuk, but I’ve heard EE-nok just as often (if not more often). EE-nuk might be getting a little more attention these days because of the [name]Enoch[/name] “Nucky” [name]Thompson[/name] character on HBO’s “Boardwalk Empire,” based off of real-life [name]Enoch[/name] “Nucky” [name]Johnson[/name], crime boss who controlled Atlantic City during Prohibition.
I like both pronunciations, and I think it’s great with [name]Noah[/name].
I’d say Ee-knock but could see how it would sound like Ee-nuck. Not the other way though, that’s odd. [name]Enoch[/name] [name]Powell[/name] is a point of (slightly controversial) reference on pronounciation
The [name]Enoch[/name] I’ve met in real life pronounced his name ee-knock. His name is [name]Enoch[/name] [name]Thatcher[/name] _____. [name]How[/name] cool is that?
So many ways to pronounce it! Thanks for all the responses - it’s helpful I honestly don’t mind any of them, but if we name our kid this then we REALLY need to pick one and stick with it…
