There is a girl in a story that I’m writing whose name is Isla, and I was just wondering how you would pronounce the name.
On the name page, it says that it is pronounced “eye-la.” However, the Spanish word for island is Isla, pronounced like “EES-la.”
So, how would you pronounce it if you saw it written down?
Always eye-la for me
I would pronounce it eye-la. [name_f]My[/name_f] great grandmother’s name was [name_f]Ila[/name_f] [name_f]Mae[/name_f], and my aunt was going to use [name_f]Isla[/name_f] if she had a girl, but she is having a boy instead so now it’s safe in my name inventory again. 
As a name for anyone other than a Spanish speaker it would be Eye-la, think the English word island, or isle, or even aisle. Silent S isn’t common in English but we have it in words similar to this name.
A Spanish speaker probably wouldn’t have that name because it’d be a weird name, but they could either follow the English Eye-la (like Spanish Jessicas aren’t Hessica, even though Spanish J is similar to English H) or go with Ees-la. As a Spanish word, yes absolutely ees-la.
It’s pronounced [name_f]Isla[/name_f], like the place in [name_f]Scotland[/name_f]. The s is silent like the word island. It’s been popular in the UK for ages now, I find it sort of weird that people struggle haha.
The name [name_f]Isla[/name_f] just happens to be a Spanish word, the name itself has no Spanish origins, therefore the pn. EES-lah is incorrect.

Definitely eye-la. [name_m]Just[/name_m] like island or isle. I’ve never heard anyone say ees-la.
I pronounce it eye-la from association and I’ve only ever known it pronounced that way. As a [name_u]Brit[/name_u], to me it’s a Scottish place! I could imagine someone unfamiliar with the name, either Scottish or Spanish versions, pronouncing it iss-la.

it’s EYE-la. [name_f]My[/name_f] mum made the mistake saying EES-la and EYS-la once when a family friend named her daughter [name_f]Isla[/name_f] [name_f]Katherine[/name_f]. I had to correct her haha.
I took Spanish in high school but my first instinct was always eye-lah.
Thank you guys for all the help! I never even made the connection with [name_f]Scotland[/name_f]… Now the pronunciation makes way more sense!
Eye-la is how I pronounce it
eye-la as someone with Scottish blood I would cringe if someone said eyes-la or ees-la
