How Would You Describe Your Naming Style?

I’m curious to know what types of names everyone likes. So, try to explain your boys and girls name styles in a few adjectives. You can give a few name examples if you’d like.

So I was discussing this the other day and I think my naming style is romantic storybook names if that’s such a genre. For boys I’m a sucker for soft biblical names like [name_u]Noah[/name_u], [name_u]Jonah[/name_u], [name_u]Gabriel[/name_u], [name_m]Ethan[/name_m] and [name_u]Elias[/name_u]. I also love [name_u]Miles[/name_u], [name_m]Theodore[/name_m], [name_u]River[/name_u] & [name_u]Forest[/name_u]. For girls I really love [name_f]Lilia[/name_f], [name_f]Genevieve[/name_f] & [name_f]Eloise[/name_f] my boy list is a lot longer! But I would say I love romantic names from a storybook I just want a swoon worthy name that screams romantic playwright : )

Classic and vintage with cottagecore influences for girls! Also vintage for the boys, but with more Irish/Scottish names and an adventurous vibe.

I tend to go for classic/vintage names. Ones that date back to at least the 1800s. Sometimes I’ll break this if I find names that I really like, and sometimes I’ll use names from literature as well. But, in the end, my preferences tend to go to those classic names

All over the place

Meaning and family connection are the most important things to me when considering names for actual future children, but my taste is vintage and somewhat whimsical.

The trick is finding a way a way to combine them since a lot of my family names aren’t my cup of tea, and those that I do see myself using are very common.

I tried to create a topic like this in my first post as a [name_u]Berry[/name_u], but no one replied to it - so I’m really glad that there’s another one!

For me, the main characteristic that defines a good name is sound. If a name sounds pleasing to me, especially if it has certain sounds in it, then I add it to my list! However, I do take the trendy/dated/timeless quality of a name into consideration, as well as spelling if there are multiple variants. Also, I have roughly two girls’ names for every boys’ name on my list!

I tend to like names that evoke some nostalgia for me or have a warm/homey feel to them, and I like lots of obscure literary names and word names. The sound of a name is my top priority, especially in combos - I’m a very auditory person. I also like a lot of more feminine-sounding names for boys. Some examples of names I love are [name_m]Latham[/name_m], [name_u]Sterling[/name_u], [name_m]Wystan[/name_m], [name_f]Fern[/name_f], [name_u]Harper[/name_u], [name_u]Evelyn[/name_u] & [name_m]Almanzo[/name_m] for boys and [name_f]Aisling[/name_f], [name_u]Flannery[/name_u], [name_f]Ruth[/name_f], [name_f]Winona[/name_f], [name_f]Delight[/name_f], [name_f]Kayleen[/name_f] & [name_f]Chamomile[/name_f] for girls.

Mines all over the place. And I’m still revamping it. But I think my naming style is something along the lines of classic/modern first name + uncommon middle name.

Somwhat bohemian with Biblical/virtue notes thrown in.

For boys I tend to like “grandpa” names and nicknames, some of my favourites are [name_u]Douglas[/name_u], [name_m]Alfred[/name_m], [name_m]Ralph[/name_m], [name_u]Laurie[/name_u], [name_u]Sol[/name_u]… But I also like some more modern names like [name_m]Cayde[/name_m], [name_u]Blue[/name_u] and [name_u]Maverick[/name_u].

For girls, my style is all over the place. I like vintage nickames like [name_f]Effie[/name_f], [name_f]Nancy[/name_f] and [name_u]Josie[/name_u], I like some unisex names like [name_u]Riley[/name_u], [name_u]Elliot[/name_u] and [name_u]James[/name_u], and I also like some more frilly, feminine choices like [name_f]Delilah[/name_f], [name_f]Elodie[/name_f] and [name_f]Genevieve[/name_f].

[name_f]My[/name_f] future kidset is probably not going to be cohesive! :joy:

I would honestly love to know what on earth my naming style is, but sometimes I just see a name and think ooh it’s so shiny and pretty and toss it on the pile

Definitely classic or vintage, simple, with warm, intrepid vibes. As Australians, naturally, I like solid nickname opportunities.

Of the modern names that I love, I think most if not all of them have nature meanings. Think [name_u]Cove[/name_u] or [name_u]Wren[/name_u].

For girls, the first names are short, timeless classics or an occasional vintage name. The middles are mostly nature or [name_u]French[/name_u] names.
For boys, the first names are classics or Biblical names for the most part. Middles are all nature names (with the exception of [name_m]Caspian[/name_m].)

I prefer timeless seeming and familiar names (with the occasional unusual pick). They are also typically either feminine or masculine; for girls these are sweet, vintage-ish names, for boys these are soft boy (often Biblical) names. I draw influence from family names, books, nature, and religious names. Most of the names at the top of my list fall into these categories, but to be honest my style is all over the place.

I think my style tends to be mainly traditional with a twist. I like names with deep roots, classic or vintage vibes, strong meanings, and maybe a bit of European flair.

According to my friends: ‘old people’. Which I suppose is valid. [name_f]My[/name_f] general rule of thumb is that most of my names are clearly gendered, long, traditional and have some kind of historical link.

Classic and Vintage with some Aristocratic splashes here and there with some hints of nostalgia and i do like international names! Also sound if i like the sound of the name then on my list it goes!

Summary: All over the place

For girls, I tend to go for Brit-ish names that sound like they should have “[name_f]Lady[/name_f]” in front of them mixed with botanical/floral/whimsical middles. (ex: [name_f]Cosima[/name_f] [name_f]Poppy[/name_f], [name_f]Edith[/name_f] [name_f]Marigold[/name_f], [name_f]Dorothy[/name_f] [name_u]Bird[/name_u])
For boys, I generally like short and spunky, often [name_m]German[/name_m], names with vintage, stabilizing middles. (ex: [name_u]Rudy[/name_u] [name_m]Ernest[/name_m], [name_u]Basil[/name_u] [name_m]Jonas[/name_m], [name_m]Otto[/name_m] [name_u]Julian[/name_u])
I will also always lean towards family names. As examples, [name_u]Bird[/name_u] came from a relative named [name_f]Elsie[/name_f] [name_u]Bird[/name_u], [name_m]Otto[/name_m] has been used for generations, [name_m]Ernest[/name_m] & [name_f]Dorothy[/name_f] were two of my grandparents names.
