I would keep the [name_f]Aveline[/name_f] spelling. I just prefer the typical spelling for most names, and it looks prettier than Avilene, imo. I’m American and say av-uh-leen but I took [name_m]French[/name_m] in school, so I’m probably not typical.
My name is spelled wrong, and heard wrong (people think I said another name when I introduce myself) often, and I haven’t found it too frustrating. So my thoughts are that if [name_f]Aveline[/name_f] is your top pick, it will work out just beautifully. It’s a very calm sounding name, which I like.
Thanks! Yes I tend to agree that traditional spellings are best. Luckily Avilene doesn’t look too cre8tyv but still, I would probably still prefer [name_f]Aveline[/name_f] ultimately.
On a somewhat unrelated note my name is also spelled in an unconventional way to how it’s usually spelled and heard wrong when I say it even though it’s only 1 syllable. I also happen to be a “C” with such a name, also 26 and seem to have many of the same names you do in my lists!
I would say it av-eh-LEEN, but I naturally say a lot of the -line names as “leen”. I also took [name_m]French[/name_m] in high school, so that may have a say in it. Honestly, I think it’s a toss-up how often people will mispronounce it. Yes, it is similar to [name_f]Adeline[/name_f] and [name_f]Caroline[/name_f] (I say both with -line ending, and haven’t heard anything different) but I was also saying [name_f]Emmeline[/name_f] as emma-LEEN when I was in eighth grade and hadn’t taken [name_m]French[/name_m] yet or had much knowledge of name pronunciations in other languages.
I prefer the [name_f]Aveline[/name_f] spelling. I’m in the Midwest US, btw.
I’ve never heard this pronounced ah-vuh-[name_f]LINE[/name_f], and I think it’s an easy correction to make if someone mispronounces it.
Honestly, I don’t think it matters what name you choose, someone will say it wrong or spell it wrong. My name is pretty familiar and fairly popular, with one truly common spelling, and people still get it wrong all.the.time. I chose a name for my own daughter knowing that ~some~ people might not know how to spell it, but I was surprised to find that probably half the people we come in contact with either say it or spell it incorrectly. And her name is also well-known in literature and pop culture, not to mention a goddess and a type of bird. Oh well.
TLDR; every name gets misspelled/misread, so go with the original version and just practice your “Actually, it’s ah-vuh-LEEN.”
Thanks everyone for your feedback! It seems that though there are differing opinions the main consensus is it’s pronounced Av-e-leen and that we should keep the original [name_f]Aveline[/name_f] spelling. I agree! And it’s so true that even the most well-known of names can often go mispronounced and misspelled. I suppose we would just have to train the little one to kindly correct people once in a while like I always had to
I’m American and my daughter is [name_f]Evangeline[/name_f], and I use the -LEEN pronunciation. We have occasionally had it pronounced the other way, but once they hear the pronunciation, it’s never a further issue.
