My sister is named [name]Eilish[/name] and many people pronounce her name wrong and I was just wondering at a first glance how would you pronounce [name]Eilish[/name]? Please don’t search the pronunciation just say how you would pronounce it if you had to read it out loud.
It’s either AY-lish or EYE-lish, as far as I know, and I can never remember which is Eili/ís(h) and which is [name]Aili[/name]/ís(h)
I’d go with AY-lish, though, just because Ceilidh is “[name]KAY[/name]-lee”, so to me that makes sense.
At first glance, I would say EYE-lish. Actually my book club recently read a book where a character was named [name]Eilis[/name], and we were all unsure how to pronounce it; however, we’re in [name]Canada[/name] so we don’t see a lot of Irish or Gaelic names.
I know an [name]Eilidh[/name] (AY-lee) so I’m familiar with the sound the Ei combination makes. Taking Lidh to be [name]Lee[/name], I would assume [name]Lish[/name] to also have the long ‘ee’ sound, giving Leesh, but knowing Gaelic pronunciations can be a bit irregular the shorter ‘i’ giving [name]Lish[/name] (rhyming with fish) wouldn’t be implausible either.
I say ay-lish, although that’s because a close family friend of mine is named [name]Eilish[/name] so I’ve grown up knowing it to be pronounced that way. I could see why people would say eye-lish, though.
I prn it Eye-lish. I have heard that [name]Eilish[/name] is prn eye-lish and [name]Ailish[/name] is prn ay-lish. I read a book with an [name]Eilish[/name] and they prn it eye-lish. It is one of my favorite Irish names.
