How would you pronounce it?

So my cousin’s wife is expecting a boy. Here is some background- My family is American, my cousin’s wife is from [name_u]Peru[/name_u]. She told me today(via Facebook Chat) that she likes either [name_m]Ulises[/name_m] [name_m]Joaquin[/name_m] or [name_m]Joaquin[/name_m] [name_m]Ulises[/name_m]. First of all can I say I [name_u]LOVE[/name_u] this and she has great taste. But then I asked her if she (being a native Spanish speaker from [name_u]Peru[/name_u]) pronounces [name_m]Ulises[/name_m] the same way we in the US would pronounce [name_m]Ulysses[/name_m]. She said no, but we had a hard time describing how to pronounce it. So how would you? I pronounce [name_m]Ulysses[/name_m] like you-liss-ees, but how would you pronounce [name_m]Ulises[/name_m]?? Again, I’m so excited with her name choices I love them!!

Thanks in advance!

Really?? No one??

Hmm… I think I’d say [name_m]Ulises[/name_m] like [name_m]Ulysses[/name_m] too (YOU-liss-ees). I agree [name_m]Joaquin[/name_m] [name_m]Ulises[/name_m] is gorgeous by the way. She really does have a great taste in names!

I don’t speak Spanish (except terrible medical Spanish-- “[name_f]Senora[/name_f], donde esta el dolor?! Respire profundo!” etc) but I bet the first sound is “oo,” rather than “You”, and the second syllable is probably ‘lee’ rather than a short vowel. I would bet the stress falls on the second syallble too, rather than the first as in English. So:

oo-[name_u]LEE[/name_u]-siss.

I’m from Oklahoma and i pronounce [name_m]Ulysses[/name_m] like you-liss-iss but my husband who is also from Oklahoma pronounces it you-liss-ees like you!

If I saw [name_m]Ulises[/name_m] with anotherSpanish name like [name_m]Joaquin[/name_m] or the surname I would say ooLEESeess. I do speak Spanish. With a more Anglo surname I might guess the English prn.

This seems rather accurate to me.

oo-[name_u]LEE[/name_u]-ses kind of like ‘Ooh! [name_u]Lee[/name_u] says…’

You-liss-ess

[name_m]Just[/name_m] a follow up - [name_m]Ulises[/name_m] [name_m]Antonio[/name_m] was born last week. He’s beautiful, and blade is correct in her pronounciation. Ooh-[name_u]LEE[/name_u]-siss

Thanks everyone!

I would pronounce [name_m]Ulises[/name_m] the same way you do. And I think [name_m]Joaquin[/name_m] [name_m]Ulises[/name_m] is, well, genious!

Oo-lease-ace Wah-keen is how I think it would be pronounced.

Congrats on the [name_m]Ulises[/name_m] [name_m]Antonio[/name_m] nephew. [name_u]Love[/name_u] it. [name_f]Hope[/name_f] he is as beautiful as his name!

The name isn’t that different in Spanish, but where will they be living? Because here everyone will pronounce it just that same as you did. My husband is from [name_f]Argentina[/name_f] & I the U.S. (also of Latin Am. descent). My son was born in [name_f]Argentina[/name_f] & I deliberately chose a name that worked in both languages. ([name_m]Joaquin[/name_m] was my second choice by the way- it was VERY popular though & a few other people we knew used the name)

Spanish- ooh-lee-says
English- You-lis-ease

U-lye-seez, maybe?
