I have a close friend named [name_u]Rene[/name_u] (pronounced [name_f]Ree[/name_f]-nee) and if I was ever expecting a daughter, I would definitely consider giving this as a second name, maybe even as a first name. The problem is, this name is so hard to pronounce. For my friend, it’s been pronounced: “Renah”, “Ruh-nay”, “[name_m]Renay[/name_m]”, “[name_u]Ren[/name_u]-nee” and my personal favourite “[name_f]Ria[/name_f]-[name_f]Nia[/name_f]”.
[name_m]How[/name_m] would you pronounce this name? [name_m]How[/name_m] would you spell it to be able to pronounce it “[name_f]Ree[/name_f]-nee” without confusion?
I live in the UK, if that helps.
I would probably pronounce it [name_f]Renee[/name_f] and assume it was a variant of that name. To avoid this maybe spell it phonetically like Reenee or Rini, although with Rini some people might pronounce it with a short i.
Definitely second this, both in terms of my pronunciation and suggestions.
I would pronounce it [name_f]Renee[/name_f], so sort of like ‘Ruh-nay’, and I would also assume any [name_u]Rene[/name_u] was male, or in the case of a middle a girl being named after a man.
I’d pronounce it like [name_f]Renee[/name_f]. Australian, by the way
I’d also pronounce it like [name_f]Renee[/name_f].
Spelling it Rini or Reeni might have the sound you want.
(Or Reighneigh… lol)
We pronounce [name_f]Renee[/name_f] and [name_u]Rene[/name_u] the same in Australia - “renay”
I would assume [name_u]Rene[/name_u] was a male but would pronounce it as [name_f]Renee[/name_f] as pp since it is basically the same [name_m]French[/name_m] name. In [name_m]French[/name_m] some names are unisex in nature but spelling will differ to determine wether the wearer is male of female but pronuncation stays the same. According to [name_m]French[/name_m] spelling rules an ‘e’ is added so [name_u]Ren[/name_u]é is male and [name_u]Ren[/name_u]ée is female while pronuncation stays the same. Simarily there is [name_u]Jean[/name_u]/[name_f]Jeanne[/name_f], [name_m]Emmanuel[/name_m]/[name_f]Emmanuelle[/name_f], Esmé/Esmée, [name_u]Adrien[/name_u]/[name_f]Adrienne[/name_f] and so forth. So I would prefer the [name_u]Ren[/name_u]ée/[name_f]Renee[/name_f] spelling for a girl
I read it as “reen”
I think it should be Reh-nay
