I’d pronounce [name_f]Iva[/name_f] as eye-vuh (or eye-vah). The letter I, followed by “va”, how else would you say it? “ee-vuh” or “ee-vah” would be [name_f]Eva[/name_f], so I definitely wouldn’t say them the same way.
[name_f]Iva[/name_f] is South Slavic form of [name_f]Ivana[/name_f], which is form of [name_f]Jane[/name_f]. It’s pronounced EE-vah and [name_f]Ivana[/name_f] is pronounced EE-vah-nah.
[name_f]Eva[/name_f] is name of Latin origin and whole world pronounce [name_f]Eva[/name_f] Eh-vah or Ay-vah. Only Englishman and [name_m]French[/name_m] people pronounce it EE-vah, because they pronounce almost every other foreign name wrong.
That’s a wee bit judgemental - I know hispanic/latino families who pronounce it as EE-vah. Technically though, (Considering you want to be technical) [name_f]Aoife[/name_f] would be AY-fah/EE-fah [name_f]Eva[/name_f] is EE-vah. Please, do not tell me that my way of pronouncing ‘almost every other foreign name’ is wrong, that’s rude and uncalled for. Perhaps, you’re misinterpreting.
Sorry, but name [name_f]Eva[/name_f] is of Latin origin and I take classes in Latin. It’s pronounced Eh-vah. [name_f]Iva[/name_f] is EE-vah.
OK, maybe I was rude. Sorry for arguing, pacifica, didn’t want to ruin a topic.
That might be how you are being taught to say it, or how it comes out in your accent, BUT to say that ALL English speaking and [name_m]French[/name_m] speaking people pronounce foreign names incorrectly is rude, and quite honestly, very judgmental. [name_m]How[/name_m] do you know that we ALL do that? [name_m]How[/name_m] many English speakers or [name_m]French[/name_m] speakers have you heard saying names incorrectly? [name_m]How[/name_m] can anyone be certain as to how a name was originally said? All I can say is, whenever I have heard someone of Hispanic descent say the name [name_f]Eva[/name_f] - it comes out as EE-vah, and, I find your comment very offensive.
Behind The Name has [name_f]Eva[/name_f] pronounced as Ee-vah for alot more languages than just English and [name_m]French[/name_m]. [name_m]Just[/name_m] because a name is said a certain way in one language does not mean that the way another language pronounces it is wrong. There are some names that truly do have more than one pronunciation and I think Eva is one of them. [name_f]Eva[/name_f] is from the Hebrew name [name_f]Eve[/name_f] which is pronounced as Eev so I don’t see how [name_f]Eva[/name_f] being pronounced as Ee-vah is so far fetched. You come off very rude and condescending. Is it pronounced as Eh-va in Latin? Sure, maybe but that doesn’t mean that the ee-vah pronunciation is wrong and saying that all English and [name_m]French[/name_m] people pronounce foreign names wrong is rude.
I would say EE-vah for [name_f]Iva[/name_f], because the only person I’ve met by that name was Bulgarian and pronounced her name was EE-vah. However, I know a lot of English speakers would assume it’s EYE-vah because [name_f]Ida[/name_f] is generally pronounced EYE-dah.
I would say EYE-vah because the one [name_m]Ivo[/name_m] I’ve come across (in a TV show, so take it with a grain of salt, haha!) said it pronounced EYE-voh, and I’m used to [name_f]Eva[/name_f] being said “EE-vah” (although I like the more international EH-vah or AY-vah (neither is really to what I’ve heard it, but it’s about as close as I can get)). But then I wonder if it’s supposed to be like EE-vah, because [name_f]Sunniva[/name_f] is soo-NEE-vah (I think). Either way I like [name_f]Eva[/name_f] more, but I think if [name_f]Eva[/name_f] can be EE-vah or AY-vah (or even EH-vah), then I think [name_f]Iva[/name_f] could be EE-vah and EYE-vah, too.
It’s like [name_m]Ivan[/name_m] without the N on the end. I have heard it pronounced. The name is derived from [name_m]John[/name_m]/[name_m]Ivan[/name_m]. [name_f]Do[/name_f] people pronounce [name_f]Isla[/name_f] like “Eee” la or [name_f]Ivy[/name_f] like “[name_f]Evie[/name_f]”? I sure hope not.
Thanks so much to everyone who has answered. In a way, the many different languages of the world having different pronunciations for similar names was way I was worried about how [name_f]Iva[/name_f] might be said. Though, it seems like overall, it could probably work as “eye-vuh” as most people seemed to be on board with that pronunciation.
Closing the topic now, but again, thank you for all the discussion!
