How would you pronounce the name Rollie on first glance?

I used all my votes on our first child - I named her after my mother and picked both the first and middle name. Now with our second child my husband claims he gets to pick the name. He of course is convinced it’s a boy and wants to name him after the motorcycle rider [name_m]Rollie[/name_m] [name_u]Free[/name_u]. He wants to name him [name_m]Rollie[/name_m] [name_m]Todd[/name_m] (a family middle name) Cox.

I don’t hate the name [name_m]Rollie[/name_m] but I’ve got 2 issues.

  1. Our last name Cox - would people constantly pronounce his name as [name_m]Roll[/name_m]-ey (like a dinner roll) [name_m]Roll[/name_m]-ey Cox. Gross!
  2. My daughter’s name is [name_u]Rylan[/name_u]. Siblings named [name_m]Rollie[/name_m] and [name_u]Rylan[/name_u]? Too similar?

Thank you for all feedback!

I would say [name_m]Rollie[/name_m] like [name_u]Raleigh[/name_u], rah-lee. I personally wouldn’t use [name_m]Rollie[/name_m] and [name_u]Rylan[/name_u] together, the sound similar to me.

Maybe spell it [name_u]Raleigh[/name_u], like the city? That way you’d get the pronunciation Raw-lee.
And [name_u]Rylan[/name_u] and [name_m]Rollie[/name_m] are very similar. Some people will find that cloying, some will find it cool. I’m pretty neutral on it myself.

I must admit, my first thought upon seeing “[name_m]Rollie[/name_m]” was about the the chubby puppy “[name_m]Rolly[/name_m]” from the movie 101 Dalmatians. And as a teacher, if I saw the name “[name_m]Rollie[/name_m]” on my roster, I probably would have initially pronounced it like “Role-ee.” You and your son might have to be prepared for a lot of mispronunciations (but hopefully not!).

But, I don’t think that [name_m]Rollie[/name_m] and [name_u]Rylan[/name_u] are too similar to be sibling names. The Rs and the Ls in both names sound nice together.

My first thought was Roly like Roly Poly, rhymes with Slowly.

Secondly I though [name_m]Rolly[/name_m] to rhyme with [name_f]Dolly[/name_f].

To be honest I think [name_m]Rollie[/name_m] and [name_u]Rylan[/name_u] are a little similar, but it could be worse.

Honestly I pronounced [name_m]Rollie[/name_m] (roll-ee) like the dinner roll. And yes, it is similar to [name_u]Rylan[/name_u]. What about suggesting another cool bot name and using [name_u]Free[/name_u] as a middle for your son?

[name_m]Maverick[/name_m] [name_u]Free[/name_u]
[name_m]Harrison[/name_m] [name_u]Free[/name_u]
[name_m]Rosco[/name_m] [name_u]Free[/name_u]
[name_m]Weston[/name_m] [name_u]Free[/name_u]
[name_m]Colton[/name_m] [name_u]Free[/name_u]
[name_u]Jesse[/name_u] [name_u]Free[/name_u]
[name_m]Austin[/name_m] [name_u]Free[/name_u]
[name_u]Hudson[/name_u] [name_u]Free[/name_u]
[name_u]Sawyer[/name_u] [name_u]Free[/name_u]

Other cool middles he may like:

[name_m]Danger[/name_m]
[name_m]Jagger[/name_m]
[name_m]Ace[/name_m]
[name_u]Justice[/name_u]
[name_m]Ranger[/name_m]
[name_m]Rocket[/name_m]
[name_m]Fox[/name_m]
[name_m]Jett[/name_m]
[name_u]Cruz[/name_u]
[name_m]Huck[/name_m]

yikes!

Yes, I’d pronounce [name_m]Rollie[/name_m] as row-lee, like rollie-pollie. No, I wouldn’t want to name my kid that.

Yes, I’d say [name_u]Rylan[/name_u] and [name_m]Rollie[/name_m] are very close, especially if you’re pronouncing it as raw-lee

What about reversing them? [name_m]Todd[/name_m] [name_m]Rollie[/name_m]?

My first thought was [name_m]Roll[/name_m] eeee. if you want Rah lee, I would spell it [name_u]Raleigh[/name_u].
