[name_m]Hi[/name_m] so I love these two names but I need some clarification on how they would be pronounced
Firstly the name elio it’s an Italian name (not sure if that would change the pronunciation)
So is it pronounced like e -lie -oh (e is in kettle)
Or is it Eh- lee -oh
Next the name [name_m]Odin[/name_m]
Is it oh - dean
Or oh -din (how it’s phonetically)
[name_m]Elio[/name_m]: I would typically say EH-lee-oh, but I recently met a young [name_m]Elio[/name_m] and his family says it more like EY-lee-oh (“ey” as in “hey, you” - not quite “ay” as in “play”). Dad is Hispanic and I believe that is a more phonetic pronunciation in Spanish, so that may explain the slight difference.
I would pronounce [name_m]Elio[/name_m] as EH-lee-oh (though maybe in some languages/accents it’s pronounced closer to EHL-yoh, with two syllables). EE-lee-oh would not occur to me.
[name_m]Odin[/name_m], I have only heard pronounced OH-din.
Eh-[name_u]Lee[/name_u]-Oh – depending on the accent/language it might be different, but pronunciations like Eh-lie-oh would not occur to me, in spite of the popularity of [name_u]Elias[/name_u]/[name_m]Eli[/name_m]/[name_m]Elijah[/name_m] (I actually really dislike thinking of it pronounced like Eh-lie-oh, it sounds like someone just thought it was [name_m]Eli[/name_m] but with an O). It has a different origin from those names since it comes from the Greek God [name_m]Helios[/name_m] (pronounced like He-[name_u]Lee[/name_u]-os). I actually really like this name, and people might be a bit more familiar with the pronunciation after the movie. Additionally, Behind the Name says it’s pronounced like Eh-lyo, with a more pronounced y sound like in yeti.
Oh-Din – I have never met a person with this name, nor have I seen it in any movies/shows/books, but this is the pronunciation that comes immediately to mind.
