I think this name has a really pleasant sound (“Hum - free”), similar to the popular Henry. Humphrey Bogart is also a cool bearer of the name.
Yet when I look it up, it seems most people hate it! Why?? What am I missing here?

truth be told, i want to like humphrey because it’s just so cute. it’s right up my alley too; i like obscure and quirky british-sounding names!
however, i can’t get over that it has the word “hump” in it.
for me it’s the first syllable, which reminds me both of hump and of an indignant “hmph!”
yup it’s the hump, and the hmph!
also, Humpty Dumpty and [name_u]Prince[/name_u] Humperdinck from the [name_f]Princess[/name_f] [name_f]Bride[/name_f]
Hmm I could see the hump being a problem… maybe I could spell it Humfrey… or I need to consider a new name
For me it’s the humpf/harrumpf sound too. It’s just quite a comical sounding name to me, it makes me think of someone puffed up and pompous, although I agree the [name_m]Bogart[/name_m] connection is great.
I know a little [name_m]Herbie[/name_m], which you might like? I don’t think it’s short for [name_m]Herbert[/name_m] in his case but it could be if you prefer a more formal name for the BC.
I love the name [name_m]Humphrey[/name_m]!
I just adopted a puppy a month ago and his name is [name_m]Humphrey[/name_m] (after Humphreys [name_m]Peak[/name_m] in AZ). However, I would never name a kid [name_m]Humphrey[/name_m] bc the word “hump” is in it. There’s really no other nicknames other than that. [name_f]My[/name_f] puppy gets called Humps, Humpy, and Humpers a lot lol.
I mean the nicknames involving “hump” are kinda inevitable. I could see a lot of bullying/getting picked on bc of those possible nicknames unless you strictly enforced another nickname from birth, but still, it just seems mean to do to a kid.
I like [name_m]Humphrey[/name_m] but I would say it Humpf-ree. As seen above I think it’s the humpf/hump element most people dislike. For me it also always makes me think of heffalumps
I would love to meet a baby named [name_m]Humphrey[/name_m]! I think it’s totally usable. Yeah, there’s the word hump in it but several names have tease-worthy words in them. [name_m]Titus[/name_m] comes to mind?
It’s a bit too on the clunky side for me but it’s not bad
I love [name_m]Humphrey[/name_m]! In Australia there’s a children’s character called [name_m]Humphrey[/name_m] B [name_m]Bear[/name_m] and he’s so cuddly and lovely, so that’s my biggest association.
I also like the [name_m]Bogart[/name_m] association and the comical character from the 70s British series “Yes, Minister”
[name_m]Humphrey[/name_m] is one of those names that I’d love to see resurrected! And please don’t spell it humfrey!!
I could be wrong, but I feel like this one is lost to time. The “hump” part puts it in the same camp as our other lost to time friends: [name_f]Dorcas[/name_f], Gay/Gaylord, [name_f]Fanny[/name_f], [name_m]Hyman[/name_m], etc. It’s that awkward to me.
For me it’s the sound and the [name_m]Bogart[/name_m] Connection is great
I knew a boy in middle school with [name_m]Humphrey[/name_m] as a surname, and kids would also chant that he “humps for free.”
Kids can be terrible, lol.
I have a cyborg snail character named Humphrey… It would be cute on a pet.
I agree with this. Unfortunately, I can’t see anyone being able to pull this name off. It’s too frumpy.
Thank y’all for all the feedback! Ultimately… we decided we can’t name a boy a name starting with “Hump” and not expect him to get bullied … back to the drawing board!
I agree with everyone else that I can only focus on the “hump” and “hmph” part.
I love it so much!
