Hydrangea as a real name

Right now this is just a guilty pleasure but given how overused Rose has sadly been and other names like Daisy, Lily, Violet, even Poppy etc that are used so much I start to dislike their associations I’ve become a die hard fan of more unheard of flower names like Ione and this one ~ Hydrangea. I love the flower itself it is among my favorites and the name sounds doable as a middle for sure but is it too daring?
Would you use this name as a first or a middle? Or do you think it just sounds ridiculous and I’m having wishful thinking?

I think it’s daring, but I don’t see any real reason why you couldn’t use it. I’d probably keep it as a middle name, but that’s possibly because I can’t think of any good nicknames and [name_f]Hydrangea[/name_f] seems like a big name. But that could just be me. :woman_shrugging:t2::slightly_smiling_face:

Have you considered [name_u]Hyacinth[/name_u]?

I mean… I named a character Alstroemeria “Alsa” so it’s not like I can judge [name_f]Hydrangea[/name_f] lol
It’s a pretty name, and Gea/Gia could work as a nickname. The only caveat I can see is that it sounds ever-so-slightly similar to the word deranged but that doesn’t seem like that much of a problem, especially since people will probably never notice that.

If you feel daring it could work especially as a middle. I love underused flower names in general (hyacinth, bluebell, [name_f]Amaryllis[/name_f], chrysanthemum etc.)

However I find that hydrangea sounds a little harsh to my ears, and I’ve always felt like it’s difficult to say. But thats more of a personal style thing than anything else I would say theoretically [name_f]Hydrangea[/name_f] is just as usable as [name_f]Bluebell[/name_f] or [name_f]Amaryllis[/name_f]

I love it! Some might say it’s daring but it’s pretty usable to me!

I don’t think [name_f]Hydrangea[/name_f] is a usable name. Maybe in the middle spot, but I still think it’s too much. [name_f]My[/name_f] mom grew up with a girl named [name_f]Chrysanthemum[/name_f] “Chrissy” who legally changed her name as soon as she turned 18. I feel [name_f]Hydrangea[/name_f] is kind of on the same level of usability as [name_f]Chrysanthemum[/name_f].

It is quite a lot though the sound is pretty and distinctive. Maybe nn [name_f]Heidi[/name_f] would make it more approachable

I think it’s great! [name_f]Special[/name_f] and serene. Hydie / [name_f]Heidi[/name_f] is a fantastic nickname. I adore it.

I think it could be a very cool middle! Can’t imagine it as a first, but it’d be very fun in the middle spot.

I actually think Hydrangea is very pretty and seeing that ppl on nameberry fill the name of the day threads with names such as Billibinia, no-one can talk. I think that Hydrangea is unique but toned down enough. I mean, it has a lovely ring to it and reminds me of the beautiful indigo-purple colour of the flower. It is summery and reminds me of sitting on the beach in the shade with a cool breeze.

I also like some lesser used flower names (Blossom, [name_f]Magnolia[/name_f], [name_u]Betony[/name_u], [name_f]Primrose[/name_f], [name_f]Pansy[/name_f], Columbine), but I feel that some are a bit too ‘botanical genus’, ie scientific sounding, to successfully make the crossing to name territory. [name_f]Hydrangea[/name_f] is one of those for me.

I ended up having two boys but [name_f]Freesia[/name_f] was on my list the first time round for a girl. I’m all for daring and eccentric flower names. Go with what you love!

[name_f]Freesia[/name_f] is another “odd flower name” I like. The sound is very distinct while still pleasing.

[name_f]Hydrangea[/name_f]
[name_f]Freesia[/name_f]
[name_f]Peony[/name_f]
[name_f]Ione[/name_f]
[name_f]Daffodil[/name_f]
[name_u]Betony[/name_u]
[name_f]Ambrosia[/name_f]
[name_f]Amarantha[/name_f]
[name_f]Zinnia[/name_f]

 these are the best in the underused botanicals category

[name_u]Love[/name_u] the flower but don’t love the possible nn [name_f]Hydra[/name_f] since it reminds me of the mythical monster. Without a nickname it could be a bit much. Maybe Angie??

I love the flower ! It’s one of my favourites! However I would only consider it in the middle name spot .

While I agree with your thoughts on Hydrangea I think there’s no need to diss people on the name of the day threads :woman_shrugging: Those threads are purely for appreciating names and a lot of the names on there may be guilty pleasures or hypothetical, so you can’t really compare them to people actually wanting to use/using really out-there names in real life (regardless of if you support using those names or not).

I love an unusual nature name. I think it’s perfectly usable, especially in the middle spot. I was going to say that I don’t particularly like the sounds in hydrangea, but according to this it’s not hy-drain-ja but hy-dran-ja!

Which PN do you use? I love Liatris, Celandine and Kniphofia. (I’ve never found anyone else that can see the appeal in Kniphofia, but I am OK being its lone cheerleader!)

I can see the appeal with Hydrangea, the more I consider it.

I made a little picture for you

Probably usable in the middle. It’s really pretty out-there for a first name, though

I think it could be used but I don’t particularly enjoy the sound nor the look so I wouldn’t use it.
