Recently, I re-discovered the beauty of hyphenated first names for girls!
My favourites are:
[name_f]Ellie[/name_f]-[name_f]May[/name_f]
[name_f]Ellie[/name_f]-[name_f]Kate[/name_f]
[name_f]Katie[/name_f]-[name_f]May[/name_f]
Sephy-[name_f]Kate[/name_f]
Sephy-[name_f]Mae[/name_f]
Immi-[name_u]Leigh[/name_u]
[name_f]Lily[/name_f]-[name_f]Mae[/name_f]
[name_f]Lily[/name_f]-[name_f]Kate[/name_f]
[name_u]Ashley[/name_u]-[name_f]Kate[/name_f]
[name_f]Lily[/name_f]-[name_f]Rose[/name_f]
[name_f]Mia[/name_f]-[name_f]Rose[/name_f]
[name_f]Millie[/name_f]-[name_u]Rae[/name_u]
[name_f]Zara[/name_f]-[name_f]May[/name_f]
[name_f]Do[/name_f] you like any of these names? What are your favourite hyphenated names? Would you ever name any of children a hyphenated name?
Hyphenated names work well [name_f]IMO[/name_f] when they keep a nicely matched pair of names together, to discourage people from dropping the second “half” of the name… as with [name_f]Lily[/name_f]-[name_f]Rose[/name_f], [name_m]Tiger[/name_m]-[name_f]Lily[/name_f], etc. They can also be used to make a unisex name less androgynous: [name_f]Marie[/name_f]-Pier, [name_u]Leslie[/name_u]-[name_f]Anne[/name_f].
Some names just seem to sound more interesting when they’re mashed together. But it’s more common in some languages than others. [name_u]Jean[/name_u]-[name_m]Luc[/name_m], [name_u]Jean[/name_u]-[name_m]Jacques[/name_m], [name_u]Jean[/name_u]-[name_m]Marc[/name_m], [name_u]Jean[/name_u]-and-pick-a-name…
My sister and I both have hyphenated names - A imee-M arie and Z oe-L ouise (I’ve added spaces to avoid being googled) - and although we both like our names we go by the first bit of the name most of the time. At work I don’t even use the -[name_f]Marie[/name_f] part because it makes my work email address really long and I get tired of people who don’t really know me ringing up and asking for me by my whole name.
I think hyphenated names work fine when they are short and flow well - [name_u]Leigh[/name_u]-[name_f]Anne[/name_f], [name_f]Beth[/name_f]-[name_f]Anne[/name_f], [name_f]Mary[/name_f]-[name_f]Beth[/name_f] etc - but with anything too long people will just drop the second part so you may as well use it as a MN instead.
I like more [name_f]Elle[/name_f] in place of [name_f]Ellie[/name_f].
[name_f]Katie[/name_f] (NO. Too nickname)
Sephy (same as [name_f]Katie[/name_f])
Immi-[name_u]Leigh[/name_u] (what?! I didn’t dislike it totally though)
[name_f]Lily[/name_f]-[name_f]Mae[/name_f] (cute)
[name_f]Lily[/name_f]-[name_f]Kate[/name_f] (meh… boring)
[name_u]Ashley[/name_u]-[name_f]Kate[/name_f] ([name_m]Olsen[/name_m] sisters)
[name_f]Lily[/name_f]-[name_f]Rose[/name_f] (NICE. pretty damn cute)
[name_f]Mia[/name_f]-[name_f]Rose[/name_f] (adorable)
[name_f]Millie[/name_f]-[name_u]Rae[/name_u] (pet name)
[name_f]Zara[/name_f]-[name_f]May[/name_f] (I didn’t like it, but it’s not unwearable)
I, normally, wouldn’t use hyphenated names. Maybe to unite two common names and give them a new aspect as:
[name_f]Anna[/name_f]-[name_f]Marie[/name_f]
[name_f]Mary[/name_f]-[name_f]Ann[/name_f]
By the way, I’m not a fan of these names either.
For the most part I dislike hyphenated names, especially cutesy ones.
I like double first names but I’m naf of the hyphen. I prefer names like [name_f]Ella[/name_f] [name_f]Mae[/name_f] over [name_f]Ella[/name_f]-[name_f]Mae[/name_f]
I don’t really like them, they make a name seem really immature and too cutesy. On the other hand, I like them if they make more sense. For example, [name_f]Anne[/name_f]-[name_f]Marie[/name_f] or [name_f]Rose[/name_f]-[name_f]Anne[/name_f], and not [name_f]Lily[/name_f]-[name_f]Rose[/name_f] (two flowers = way too cutesy!) and [name_f]Ellie[/name_f]-[name_f]May[/name_f] ([name_f]Ellie[/name_f] is cutesy enough as it is).
Oh no. I dislike them. They appear really try hard to me. Someone who wants to be different so they give their child two first names instead of on (and they usually go by one their entire life anyway). Plus, every double barrelled name I know is either -leigh/lee -rose -may/mae/mai -louise -ray/rae. Where is the creativity! (they are usually always [name_f]Ella[/name_f]'s and [name_f]Lilly[/name_f]'s too)
I knew a [name_f]Sarah[/name_f]-[name_f]Louise[/name_f] who went by her full name. I also knew a [name_f]Jessica[/name_f]-[name_u]Leigh[/name_u] who I had no idea had a double barrelled name until about 6 years after I met her (and she hated it too). Then there was [name_f]Amelia[/name_f]-[name_f]May[/name_f] who went by [name_f]Millie[/name_f] her entire life.
[name_f]Imo[/name_f], if I was going to use a double barrelled first name I wouldn’t use any of the names above and I’d drop the hyphen. So for instance, the first name would just be, say, [name_f]Sophia[/name_f] [name_f]Rose[/name_f], instead of [name_f]Sophia[/name_f]-[name_f]Rose[/name_f].
I [name_u]LOVE[/name_u] hyphenated names to be honest! From your list, I adore:
[name_f]Ellie[/name_f]-[name_f]May[/name_f]
[name_f]Lily[/name_f]-[name_f]Mae[/name_f] (prefer [name_f]May[/name_f])
[name_f]Lily[/name_f]-[name_f]Kate[/name_f]
[name_f]Lily[/name_f]-[name_f]Rose[/name_f]
[name_f]Mia[/name_f]-[name_f]Rose[/name_f]

I personally don’t care for hyphenated names. I like two first names or first and middle used together more. Names of people I’ve met before:
[name_m]Mark[/name_m] [name_m]Nicholas[/name_m] (FN, MN, “[name_m]Mark[/name_m]-[name_u]Nick[/name_u]”)
[name_f]Mary[/name_f] [name_f]Grace[/name_f] (FN, MN)
[name_f]Mary[/name_f] [name_f]Bridget[/name_f] (FN, MN)
[name_f]Mary[/name_f] [name_f]Kathryn[/name_f] (FN, MN)
[name_f]Mary[/name_f] [name_f]Hannah[/name_f] (FN, MN)
[name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] [name_f]Catherine[/name_f] (FN, MN, “[name_f]Ellie[/name_f]-[name_f]Kate[/name_f]”)
[name_f]Anne[/name_f] [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] (2 FN’s)
[name_f]Mia[/name_f]-[name_f]Christine[/name_f] ("[name_f]Mia[/name_f]")
[name_f]Annmarie[/name_f]
I have a sister named [name_f]Mary[/name_f]-[name_f]Claire[/name_f] who goes by the full name. That particular hyphenated name is fairly popular in the area I grew up.
I kinda like it, but prefer double barreled names without the hypen. Of your list, I think they’re all really cute, except for Immi-[name_u]Leigh[/name_u]. It’s cute, but I’d stick with [name_f]Emily[/name_f]/[name_f]Emmaleigh[/name_f]
These are all too cutesy for me. I’m not big on double first names, with the exception being [name_m]John[/name_m]-[name_m]Simon[/name_m] for a boy, which I think is impossibly handsome.
I think it’s that many double names that flow well also have filler component, which is not my cup of tea.
I like hyphenated first names but my husband’s not a fan so I won’t ever be able to use one. For years I had [name_f]Sophie[/name_f]-[name_f]Anne[/name_f] on my list and I still think it’s a great name. I also liked [name_f]Mary[/name_f]-[name_f]Claire[/name_f], either as a hyphenated first name or as a nickname for [name_f]Mariella[/name_f] [name_f]Claire[/name_f].
I do like some hyphenated names, especially the more unusual ones. There is a girl I know named [name_f]Ellie[/name_f]-[name_u]James[/name_u], which I think is fantastic :).
Some that I like:
[name_f]Mary[/name_f]-[name_u]Dove[/name_u]
[name_f]Mary[/name_f]-[name_u]Grey[/name_u]
[name_f]Mary[/name_f]-[name_u]Claude[/name_u]
[name_u]Prairie[/name_u]-[name_f]Faye[/name_f]
[name_u]Vinnie[/name_u]-[name_f]Pearl[/name_f]
[name_f]Opal[/name_f]-[name_u]James[/name_u]
[name_f]Fern[/name_f]-[name_f]Louise[/name_f]
[name_f]Susanna[/name_f]-[name_m]Paul[/name_m]
[name_u]Gardener[/name_u]-[name_u]Lou[/name_u]
[name_u]Tully[/name_u]-[name_u]Dove[/name_u]
[name_u]Teddy[/name_u]-[name_f]Pearl[/name_f]
[name_f]Bessie[/name_f]-[name_u]Grey[/name_u]
[name_f]Betty[/name_f]-[name_u]Claude[/name_u]
I’m not a big lover of hyphenated names, but I do like [name_f]Lily[/name_f]-[name_f]May[/name_f]. I once met a girl whose name was [name_f]Callie[/name_f]-[name_f]May[/name_f].
My sisters and I all have hyphenated names that we all go by. I think my sister’s name, An ne-Ce cile, is really pretty and quite uncommon.
I don’t like hyphenated names. If you want your kid to be [name_u]Leigh[/name_u]-[name_f]Ann[/name_f], why not just name her [name_f]Leanne[/name_f] or have her go by first and middle name? I’ve met a couple of people who go by their first AND middle name, and it totally works for them. There is also more freedom that way because you can just go by the middle name if you don’t like the first.
