I have been thinking about my name for a long time without posting to try and sort my head out. However I am stumped on the best solution now. My legal name is [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] with no middle name. [name_m]Brooks[/name_m] is the surname.
I need to change my name as [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] just isnt long enough on its own to me.
The two options I am trying to choose between are [name_f]Lucy[/name_f]-[name_f]Rose[/name_f] and [name_f]Lucie[/name_f]. Now I can see problems with both of these options.
[name_f]Lucy[/name_f]-[name_f]Rose[/name_f]: With [name_f]Lucy[/name_f]-[name_f]Rose[/name_f] I would want to be called [name_f]Lucy[/name_f]-[name_f]Rose[/name_f] most of the time by other people. I wouldn’t want [name_f]Rose[/name_f] to be dropped of my name. Another problem is the hyphen. I feel the hyphen is necessary to make it clear to people that the name is one full first name and yet I have read stories on the internet where people with hyphenated names have had issues with them. For example people leave off the hyphen between the names on official forms and some computers don’t except hyphenated names.
[name_f]Lucie[/name_f]: The only problem I can see with [name_f]Lucie[/name_f] is that it might be misspelled from time to time. Now as long as the people who know me well like family and close friends spell my name correctly I am fine with correcting people.
Putting [name_f]Rose[/name_f] in the middle spot is not an option for me.
Middle names haven’t been decided yet. I am waiting to decide on those once I have chosen my first name.
So from this information which name would you go for if you were me? [name_f]Lucy[/name_f]-[name_f]Rose[/name_f] or [name_f]Lucie[/name_f].
Any help is appreciated. At this point I am getting annoyed with myself for not being able to decide.
I’ll be honest - I would stick with [name_f]Lucy[/name_f]? I agree that there are a lot of issues with [name_f]Lucy[/name_f]-[name_f]Rose[/name_f] that could arise, and if you’re just switching from [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] to [name_f]Lucie[/name_f], which to my knowledge is the exact same pronunciation, where there would be more problems with spelling, I don’t see the point in changing it.
Would you consider [name_f]Lucille[/name_f] or [name_f]Lucia[/name_f]? I think this could help eliminate the spelling and hyphenation problem while also adding length. However, if I were you, I’d go for [name_f]Lucy[/name_f]-[name_f]Rose[/name_f]. Being in possession of a hyphenated name (granted, it’s a last name), I am familiar with some of the issues that come up, and ultimately I don’t deal with them often. Also, [name_f]Lucie[/name_f] is the same number of syllables and only one letter longer than [name_f]Lucie[/name_f], so it does not add much length.
I also tend to agree with this. Perhaps keeping [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] and then adding a longer, distinctive middle would be a good way to avoid the mentioned issues?
I think you have a great name in [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] [name_m]Brooks[/name_m] and would only consider adding a mn if you feel like you need some longer or with more “weight” to it. [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] [name_f]Rose[/name_f] [name_m]Brooks[/name_m] is a nice combo, but has a lot of S sounds in it. I’m not sure why you would just change the spelling-- I don’t think it really changes anything. That said, I’m [name_f]Lucinda[/name_f] nn [name_f]Luci[/name_f]-- and I love having both options for different situations (professionally, always [name_f]Lucinda[/name_f]). People who don’t know me spell my name wrong all the time, but this is really fine with me and I actually put [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] down for various e-mail or subscription matters to track it or make it easier.
I like the suggestion of [name_f]Lucinda[/name_f] nn [name_f]Lucie[/name_f]…I also like the idea of [name_f]Lucie[/name_f]-[name_f]Rose[/name_f]. After trying out not using the hyphen, I do think if you’re going to use [name_f]Rose[/name_f] as part of your first name the hyphen makes it clear that the names are one unit & that they’re pronounced in the usual manner of [name_f]Lucie[/name_f] & [name_f]Rose[/name_f] (Lucierose & Lucyrose definitely don’t work [name_f]IMO[/name_f]). FWIW, I have a hyphenated last name & the hyphen does get ignored, primarily when booking airline flights, but otherwise it’s not a hassle.
I would pick [name_f]Lucie[/name_f]. You have been toying with this idea for some time and seem to be more comfortable with this spelling. I think it’s a fine spelling and if you’re happy with sometimes correcting people then go for it. I’m not keen on [name_f]Lucie[/name_f]-[name_f]Rose[/name_f] and not sure it’s the answer for you. You have already considered the longer [name_f]Lucie[/name_f] names so they may not be for you.
