Would love some thoughts on this–if you had a hyphenated last name, would you consider skipping a middle name altogether?
I think I wouldn’t. I am almost sure my kids will have a hyphenated last name and I will definitely use a middle name.
Well, it depends on the length of your certain last name but still, I would use a middle name.
I’d definitely consider it. I don’t have a middle name and my maiden name was a very common last name with 8 letters.
I never felt that I missed out not having a middle name even though my siblings had one, and I always love coming across someone else with no middle- it’s like finding a four leaf clover
I don’t have a middle name, but my husband and daughter do. Thinking of skipping it for the next one though–even if on legal documents it becomes X or NMN (no middle name).
Yay! Someone else with no middle! And does it really? I haven’t seen that on any of my legal documents; maybe it’s different here in Australia.
[name_f]My[/name_f] son has a hyphenated last name, and we used a middle. Some family members thought the name would be too long, but middle names were an important part of my and my sisters’ identities–we all always loved our middle names more than our firsts!-- so it was a tradition I wanted to continue.
I might have been more likely to drop the middle we’d gone with a two word last name (no hyphen), but I still didn’t want my last name to get lost in the middle or dropped.
I personally won’t be hyphenating my surname with my future husband’s as I have never liked my surname so would want to take his. If I did use a hyphenated last name I would still want to use a middle name.
I think for me it would depend on the length of the surnames. But I know a child with 2 first names hyphenated and a hyphenated surname and I think that’s way too much.
