I love Benjamin - but I really hate the nickname Ben

…but I know how common [name]Ben[/name] is as a nickname. I love [name]Benjamin[/name] in full (I also like [name]Bo[/name] as a nn but I don’t know if that works)…Are there are any other nicknames for [name]Benjamin[/name]? Would you use a name even if you hated the obvious nickname?

There’s [name]Benji[/name] and [name]Jamie[/name].

As long as I liked at least one nickname, I would still use a name even if I didn’t like the most obvious nickname.

[name]Just[/name] don’t use a nickname. Correct people and tell them that its [name]Benjamin[/name], not [name]Ben[/name].

I like [name]Jamie[/name] for [name]Benjamin[/name], too. I have a little second cousin whose name is [name]Benjamin[/name]–and honestly, it seems like he’s referred to as just [name]Benjamin[/name] 70% of the time. I think his dad is the only one who consistently calls him [name]Ben[/name]–everyone else calls him mostly [name]Benjamin[/name], and occasionally [name]Ben[/name]. His grandmother and great-grandmother used to call him [name]Benny[/name]/[name]Benny[/name] Boy, too, when he was younger (he’s 5 now). So honestly, I think you could do [name]Benjamin[/name], with no nn. But if you call him [name]Jamie[/name] occasionally, I think it’ll reinforce that he’s not [name]Ben[/name], but either [name]Benjamin[/name] or [name]Jamie[/name].

ETA: I have to say, though, I do love [name]Benjamin[/name] nn [name]Bo[/name]/[name]Beau[/name]!

[name]Bo[/name] is my preferred nickname for [name]Benjamin[/name], even though it isn’t intuitive. [name]Just[/name] don’t use a nickname if you don’t like the obvious nicknames.

[name]Bo[/name] is cute! There’s also [name]Benjie[/name], [name]Jem[/name], and [name]Jamie[/name]…

I agree! I know an [name]Alexander[/name] and he goes by his full name only. No one calls him [name]Alex[/name].

[name]Benji[/name] is a better alternative to [name]Ben[/name].

Offer [name]Benji[/name], [name]Jem[/name], or [name]Bo[/name] as an alternative. You can correct people and say it’s [name]Benjamin[/name], not [name]Ben[/name], but your son might disagree- if HE likes [name]Ben[/name], you’re gonna have a son named [name]Ben[/name]. If you offer an alternative nickname, you’ve got a decent shot of avoiding it. But nicknames have a life of their own, and you can’t control them as much as you think. If you dislike [name]Ben[/name] that much, don’t tempt people with [name]Benjamin[/name].

I’m in the same boat – I love [name]Benjamin[/name], nn [name]Benji[/name], but can’t stand [name]Ben[/name]. I do wonder if it’s inevitable, however. I know many, many Bens, and if you have a son named [name]Benjamin[/name], he probably will too. As a teenager he might prefer [name]Ben[/name]…and at that point, a nickname will probably be the least of your concerns anyway!

I have a brother in law who’s a [name]Benjamin[/name], and his nn is Biz. [name]Little[/name] siblings couldn’t say his name clearly and called him Bizamin, and Biz stuck. Everyone thought it was cool through his teens and 20’s. Half the time you end up with nicknames that have nothing or not much to do with the actual name anyway, so if you love [name]Benjamin[/name], use it.

[name]Benji[/name], [name]Benno[/name], [name]Benjamin[/name], [name]Jam[/name]

[name]Benji[/name] is a great nickname…but I think [name]Benjamin[/name] can grow up sans nickname!
