I love this name but I don't know if I can use it

I love the name [name_f]Zelda[/name_f] a lot. In general, I’ve seen [name_f]Zelda[/name_f] having a lot of positive feedback here on this forum. [name_f]My[/name_f] issue is that my family did play [name_u]Legend[/name_u] of [name_f]Zelda[/name_f] a lot while we were growing up and presently we still play it. It is something that all my siblings and I bonded over. [name_f]My[/name_f] older brother would get whatever new game was out and we’d all sit around the TV and watch him play, and try to help solve puzzles and point out things he might’ve missed. Then after he was done we’d each get a turn to try and play for ourselves. There’s a huge age gap of 17 years over all of us, but [name_u]Legend[/name_u] of [name_f]Zelda[/name_f] was one of the things we could talk about even at our different stages of life.

So I have a lot of positive memories associated with the name [name_f]Zelda[/name_f], which is why I love it so much. However, I don’t know if I can use it because of my family having such a big love for the game. (Side note: we have played most of the games and my youngest sister has a book on the lore but as a whole, we are not obsessed fans) I feel like it’s almost like a forbidden name, but that has never been made a rule or even been discussed.

What would you do in my situation? Would you still use it because of the strong positive association or would you leave it to always being the game your family loves?

On another note, I have not asked any of my siblings as of yet their opinions on the name [name_f]Zelda[/name_f]. I wanted to see what feedback I would get here before braving those waters. Thanks in advance!

In your situation, I would use [name_f]Zelda[/name_f]! The connection seems like a great family tribute (and I really like [name_f]Zelda[/name_f] as a name anyway).

I think if you explained it, it would come off as an honor instead of a coincidence. Also, I love the name [name_f]Zelda[/name_f]!

[name_m]Hi[/name_m], also a fan of the name and the games! I think it’s useable. You might get some weird looks at first, but eventually I think your family would get to used to it and separate a real [name_f]Zelda[/name_f] from a video game [name_f]Zelda[/name_f]. It’s a gorgeous name and could be a cute tribute to your siblings!

I would definitely use it, in your case! There is nothing wrong with the association to the video game to begin with, and since it’s meaningful to you, the association makes this name even more perfect for you.
I think you’ll definitely come across a lot of people referencing the video game when hearing her name, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing! I think [name_f]Zelda[/name_f] is a beautiful choice. :slightly_smiling_face:

I think that backstory makes [name_f]Zelda[/name_f] an even more perfect choice! Sure, depending on your relationship with your family and how “jokey” you are together generally, there could be some gentle ribbing about the name at first, but it sounds like you genuinely all share some great memories tied to this name and from what you say, this doesn’t sound like a dysfunctional situation where people are likely to say anything horrible to your daughter about it. I bet they’d all love it once they got used to the idea! [name_f]Zelda[/name_f] is fabulous :sparkles:

I’d use it - it’s a sweet tie to your memories and I think people will always associate with both your baby and the game!

I think your lovely family association with the name is all the more reason TO use it! That is so sweet!!! Your baby wouldn’t have to be named after the game per se, but her name would have such a big connection to so many family members! I love it.

Thank you all for the responses! I really appreciate everyone’s feedback and it helped give me the courage to ask my sibling what they thought. Everyone loved the idea and I just feel so much relief!
